What damage does harmonic balance that is bad do

The harmonic balancer is basically a vibration dampened for the engine to eliminate engine vibration. The problem is that sometimes the actual ribbed pulley part on the balancer will separate from the rubber insert and slop around causing the belt the slop around with it. In turn the belt can fray or break. I would say its totally legit what they are saying. Just make sure you always ask to see the part after any work is done. Good luck

1998 kia sportage 4WD engine turns but wont turn over (dosent even try) it just makes a winding sound and leaking coolant around harmonic balancer?

Sounds like your water pump leaking and a broken timing belt. The water pump runs off the timing belt, and sounds like your water pump took out the belt. The winding noise you hear sounds like the engine crank turning but not the cam shaft, broken belt, no compression. Have someone watch the harmonic while you try to start it. If it's turning, that's your problem.

The balancer is bad, or it has come loose. There is a little metal wedge piece called a woodruff key that holds the balancer in place, and then the crankshaft center bolt keeps the balancer on tight.
There should be no wobble or movement at all of the harmonic balancer. Take it off, it may still be alright, but find out why the pulley moves on the crankshaft. Maybe the key is missing. This should not be an expensive repair-it's not a problem with the motor, just that balancer pulley.

My 93 Mercury Topaz has had a loud rattling noise on the right side of the engine for over a year and has gotten louder with time. I man at a gas station told me he had the same noise with his Ford Tempo...

A mechanic would use a stethoscope to listen for the source of the noise.
If it is a loose balancer, you normally remove the motor mounts and support the engine from the bottom to gain access to the bolt.
It would be advisable to take the bolt out and use some locktite on the threads.

Loud sounds on harmonic balancer and tentioner is it safe to drive this way

Hi,
Better get your vehicle to the nearest garage and have them check your belt tensioner, that is the only one that would produce sound.
Tensioner have this roller bearing that might already going out and you need to replace it.

Hope that helps!

Harmonic balancer the ruber is seperating does this meen its bad will it make a noise like a knocking sound

Yes, it's definitely bad. But I'm not sure it would make a knocking sound. That sounds more like your crankshaft, but the harmonic balancer is designed to smooth out crank imbalances.

Im getting belt squeak its not harmonic

The belts may need to be adjusted. Make sure the squeak is not from your brake pads. You may need to have new brake pads. You also, may have gotten water in your engine from a poor quality gasoline or from rainy weather. Make sure also, you have fluid in the small tank which is the brake fluid.

if you can turn the serpentine belt either direction by hand at all you probably need a harmonic balancer..or just look in the passenger wheelwell at the h/balencer and see if the rubber is cracked all the way around.. just fixed one with that issue
