The cables getting hot is normal if you have to crank the motor over for a long period of time. If it does eventually start but doesn't stay running, it could be a couple of things. I would start by, once it starts try spraying starting fluid in the air cleaner while it is running and it continues to run, I would say more than likely it is either bad gas or plugged fuel filter. More than likely a plugged fuel filter.

I hope this helps! Please vote if it helps you!! Thanks!

Why won't my 1997 ford expedition 5.4 triton start everything works except stereo turn key nothing engine don't turn over there's nothing

Check that the giant red wire on the starter is connected to the starter and the battery. Then check that the giant black wire on the starter goes to ground.

Actually, if there isn't even a click, check the starter relay. And it's fuse. It could also be the ignition switch.

Is there an electric starter switch on a 2003 ford expedition truck4.6L ? If so where is it located

The electric starter switch is the part that is behind the part your key goes into. Is the security light on steady or flashing rapidly? Have you checked for power at the small wire on the starter with the key in the crank position? Have you tried starting with the transmission in neutral?

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

I installed a new alternator, batter, and starter in my 1997 Ford Expedition and my truck wont start unless you hit the starter. All the wires are good so what else is there to check?

Sounds like you still have a bad starter. You can get a bad one from the parts store. Go back and have them test it. Or could be cylinoid.

1997 ford expedition will not crank, will turn but will not turn over

Remove a spark plug and connect its wire back on it and lay the plug against the engine...crank engine to see if you have spark.

If you have spark...put plug back in and move to fuel system.

Wait a minute...if your engine is not cranking or turning over...then check your battery and starter.

Here is the picture:

And this is removal manual:
Removal & Installation

2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Remove the starter terminal cover.
4. Remove the terminal nut and separate the battery starter cable from the starter motor.
5. Disconnect the solenoid (S) terminal connector, if equipped with a starter mounted solenoid.
? To disconnect the hard-shell connector from the solenoid (S) terminal, grasp the plastic shell and pull off; do not pull on the wire. Pull straight off to prevent damage to the connector and (S) terminal.

10. Connect the solenoid (S) terminal connector, if equipped with a starter mounted solenoid.
11. Install the starter solenoid safety cap. If equipped.
12. Lower the vehicle.

My expedition won't start. I have replaced the battery and it acts like it wants to start but it won't turn over. Do you think the problem is the starter?

More likely you will need to replaced the starter solenoid as that is what sends direct power to the starter and ignition at the same time.

Wont start

Sounds the starter is no good (sometimes they'll work intermittently for a while before they totally **** out). Of course it could just be a starter wiring problem (sending wire).

1997 expedition turn key on and starts it's self

Under the hood on the passenger fire wall you will see the starter solenoid.Unplug the small wire running to it and see if your problem goes away.If it does problem is ignition switch if it does not then tap the solenoid and see if it quits. If this takes care of it then solenoid is bad.

make sure battery is charged. Check batt. terminals for corrosion. Check ground wires from batt. to the point where they are grounded to ( engine and body ) for loose connections.
