Question about 1989 Mercury Tracer

1 Answer

When starting out from a stop while on an incline (forward or in reverse) the car stalls out. when starting out from a stop on level ground, I have to tach the thing up to about 3500rpm then dump the clutch to take off. If I don't the thing moves like a slug untill it hits 3000 rpm. I was told it could be a dog clutch problem...does that make sense? If that is the problem, how costly is the fix?

If it is your clutch the it could be as cheep as the cost of a clutch if ya do the job urself.. is your car idling at 900-1200 rpm on idle... because if ur clutch is slipping it may just need to be adjusted..

Car died in driveway on steep incline when trying to go from reverse to drive now won't start back

Any chance you are so low on gas that the incline is causing fuel starvation? Another possibility is that the roll over switch was triggered and the fuel pump got shut off as a safety measure. There is usually a reset switch for that, often in the trunk area.

Try cleaning the idle speed control valve and the throttle body, then disconnect the battery negative and let stand for 5 minutes and try it.

Have you checked the level of the transmission fluid lately? If not check it and it should be a good red color, and at least to the cold level marker on the dip stick.

The transmission solenoids are not working properly. Probably requires a transmission rebuild.
I don't think it's in the ground strap or wiring.
It's an internal problem with the transmission.

Won't back up!

well slipping in reverse would be tranny...;but by saying the engine spits,,,sputters ,,,stalls,,,,sounds like engine not enough power to drive it in reverse...i'm guessing forward no problems...first thing comes to mind is in reverse engine moves on motor mounts as you give it gas..could be wiring harness rubbing on block causing short condition..when in forward engine moves opisite direction...while idling in park, shake wiring harness all over different spots see if you can simulate the condition.....are there any engine codes....also does it have a problem in reverse on a flat surface... or only on a incline....if only on an incline check fuel pressure while in reverse on incline.. see if loosing pressure for some reason..on incline fuel goes to lowest part of tank...

2005 g6 stalling

I would suggest checking your wiring (core wire on the distributor, plug wires and the negative battery ground) I would imagine that the forward motion of the vehicle is possibly making your wires lose connectivity and making the car stall. Just a thought though.
