Where can i get a cheep replacment cv joint for my front drive shaft? or can it be repaired or replaced with something else?

probably a bad passenger CV joint on the axle. You can purchase a completely rebuilt half shaft cheaper than you can replace one CV joint.

You have front wheel drive & CV Joints,
not U-Joints ,is that not correct

CV Drive Axles in front wheel drive vehicles

Cv boot failure


The best thing to do is completely remove the front drive shaft (assuming you are talking about the front CV boots).
1) Jack up the front end of the vehicle.2) Remove front wheel(s), track rod ends and slacken [don't remove completely just yet] the centre hub nut and remove split pin.3) With the gear in neutral, and using an appropriately sized round punch and hammer, punch out the location pin from the drive shaft where the drive shaft meets the gearbox output shafts.4) With the assistance of a flat screwdriver, lever and pull the drive shafts off the gearbox output shafts and let them drop down. 5) Using a rubber mallet, hammer the drive shaft through the front hub. You kept the nut on the end of the shaft initially so as to prevent damage to the drive shaft threads during hammering. This nut will have to be backed off and eventually removed as the shaft slides through and out of the hub unit.
With the entire shaft removed from the vehicle:
1) Cut off or slacken and remove any rubber boot retaining clips.2) slide the rubber boot(s) towards the centre of the shaft.3) Remove the inner joint first by using a small, flat screwdriver to flick out the retaining wire from the inner lip of the joint. (Keep this wire)4) Slide off inner joint cup and clean.
5) Locate the spring clip from the inner end of the shaft and carefully remove without over-stretching. if you have no replacement.
6) Slide off inner C.V. joint, and clean.
7) Remove damaged boot(s), clean all components, re-grease with LM grease and replace.
8) Reinstallation is the opposite of removal steps.


Note: Take care when re-installing drive shaft to gearbox output shaft. This will usually only align to a single position. Before tapping retaining pin back into place, visually inspect alignment of the shaft's holes. You can use your round punch to help align the holes before re-installation of the retaining pin.


Tip: With the removal of the front drive shafts, it may be a good opportunity to also replace front gearbox output oil seals and front wheel bearing-drive shaft dust seals. These are fairly inexpensive and may prolong the life of components as well as reduce the need for repetitive removal of parts.

Hi,
the quickest way, and usually the cheapest. is to check for someone that specialises in drive shaft repair. It is usually more expedient and cheaper, to have the complete drive shaft assy, complete with CV joint replaced as a unit assembly.

Based on my own experience, replacing a drive shaft CV joint is a false economy. It is so much quicker pulling the complete shaft and fitting a new / rebuilt unit.

However, I do hasten to say, it's a personal choice.

check your CV joint boots. If the boot is torn then the CV joint is probably bad. replace the whole drive shaft instead of repairing just the outer CV joint.

If this is a front wheel drive car then the sound is the Constant Velosity (CV) joint, usually happens when the CV joint boot tears and let in road debris. You can remove the shaft and knock the joint off the shaft clean and replace boot and refill with grease, you will need a CV Boot Kit for your car, or you can replace the shaft. CV JOINTS?


The CV joints are needed to transfer the torque at a constant speed to steered wheels as well as to accommodate up and down motions of the suspension.
You will find CV joints in all front-wheel drive cars. Many rear- and four-wheel drive cars and trucks have CV joints as well. The CV joint is packed with grease and protected by the rubber or plastic boot.
It does not require any maintenance and supposed to last very long provided that protective boot will not get damaged.

CV joints clicking, how long to total failure and any additional damage?


Since the CV -joints are now clicking and clunking it has to be replaced, by just replacing the boots only won't stop it from clicking and clunking.
For front wheel drive vehicles its always better to inspect the CV joint boots more often and as soon as you find it torn thn before the joint is damaged by foreign particals entering it you should change them.

Yes you can, If you have taken the front drive shaft off, you can even still drive with the CV joint in place till you want to remove it. You may get some vibration around corners till you replace the CV joint or remove it totally.
But if your going to remove it, might as well wait till you have the replacement so you only do the job once. I had a Bad CV joint on a AWD Chevy van and did the same thing so i could still use it, and then replaced the CV joint when the weather got better.

on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
