Question about Saturn SL2

1 Answer

Wining noise coming from where the timing chain and pump are at on a Saturn 2002 SL2. Increasing more loudly and gradually the last 2 months while the auto is in drive. Not sure if it is the pump or chain. Not sure if the Saturn has a chain or a belt.

Loud whinning noise on 2000 saturn 1.9 sohc dont know what to replace

Typically not the tensioner usually that will just become weak, the wining comes from 2 different items and the easiest to change is the top pulley can't remember the technical name for it. But the bearing goes bad in that creating a whine the other is your power steering pump. Usually you can tell if it is that by starting the engine and turning the wheel at a stop. Try the top pulley first. Take the fan belt off, one bolt in the center of the pulley and pull it off.

You will need to remove the valve cover and inspect it, otherwise it is anyone's guess what the noise is.

Might purchase 2002 Saturn SL2 95,000 miles. Should timing chain, serpentine belt & water pump be replaced? Estimate on cost?

The timing chain should be fine and as a rule will last the life of the engine. I've seen several of these engines with over 250k on them and they are still running fine. If the serpentine belt is original yet then I would certainly change that, odds are however that it has been replaced at least once by now. Take a good look at it and check for cracks, fraying, etc. If in doubt then I would replace it. As for the water pump I wouldn't necessarily replace it unless you think it may be seeping coolant or the bearing is rough or loose when you turn it by hand. They aren't very expensive or hard to replace however so it's pretty much a judgement call on your part.

2002 Saturn Vue V6 AWD sounds like an F1 car when i drive it. Very loud constant noise. Checked trans fluid and it was fine.

I have a 2002 saturn vue. Same thing..sounded like a jet engine ...loud humming as I accelerated . It got increasingly worse. It turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Replace them, now the noise is half as loud...have to do the rears also! 93,000 miles on it. Also, don't forget to replace the timing belt. It it goes too long and breaks, it will trash the engine...

Saturn SL2

It sounds like the car is over heating. Have the thermostat changed and go from there. If this doesn't help have your technician look at the radiator and coolant system. Hope this helps. Good luck.

1997 saturn sl2 dohc is there a timing belt or chain on it

These engines have a timing chain, not a belt. They also have nylon coated guides under the cover that wear. If you change the chain yourself, or have it done, check the guides as well.

noise is caused by lack of oil to lifters, or worn timeing chain. if noise is from lifters it should go away wit proper oil level, if still there needs timeing chain.
