    original or upgraded radio?

  • jwillia341 Sep 02, 2010

It has the original radio that came with the car

  • jwillia341 Sep 02, 2010

I had my dc amp meter on the positive battery cable and started checking the fuses. when I removed fuse #42 The amp draw droped from 3 amps to .07 amp.

  • jwillia341 Sep 02, 2010

I know the #42 fuse is for the radio, what I don't know is what is causing the radio to draw 3 amps when everything is turned off and how do I fix this problem.

Attach the volt meter to the power wire to the radio and stay in the car observing the meter. Unplug each fuse till the reading goes to Zero. That will be your draw in the circuit

    Did this work?
My daughter drives a 2005 Beetle, same problem. Mechanic removed her radio to stop the draw.
Will new radio/stereo not have the same draw problem

What is normal current draw with engine off, key removed, doors closed?

Ideally it should be nothing. However, given all the electronics/accessories it should not be higher than 250ma or 1/4 amp. Even this low draw will drain an unused vehicles battery in a few days

Voltage draw down found!
1) repaced bad battery
2) rechecked voltage draw still showing 12 volt drain with all under hood fuses, relays, and interior fuses and relays pulled.
3) Computer was the 12 Volt drain, & had to reprogram itself.
4) gave the new battery a good long charge, reinstalled the battery into the vehicle.
5) Hooked the battery up, pulled the keys out of the ignition, close and lock all doors with auto door lock. Waited minimum of 20 min so the computer would go back into the sleep mode.
6) after 20 minute wait, rechecked the voltage draw by removing the neg battery cable from the battery, hooking volt meter + lead to battery cable end, and neg lead to battery neg post, nothing showing or zero reading.
7) Hooked the neg cable up to battery, started the truck and let the engine idle to normal run temp, then fast idled 1200-1300 rpms for 2 minutes, then drove the vehicle for 5+ miles and alternating speeds. All appears back to normal now. Alt showing 14.2 to 14.4 volts, and no other problems.
After all of the afore mentioned, my problems began with a bad battery cell, thus caused my computer to have the memory reset.Until the computer was reset, I had a 12v continious draw down! I got this info from a repair manual, that I purchase sometime ago. Thanks for your alls help........EJB

Why does battery drain ?

there are several reasons...not enough cells in a weak battery(not enough cold cranking amps in battery to turn the car over). Check your alternator as well. Does the temperature drop? Sounds like you need a new battery(also when you turn off your car- TURN OFF EVERYTHING...sometimes a radio, or something not turned off(even a trunk light, interior light, security system(various things)- can zap the juice from your battery overnight or within hrs.-leaving not enough to start the car the next day....Hope that helps....Xx, Jasmine

Battery is being drained by something, its new

2 things, not enought cold cranking amps, or while you where trying to start the car the brushs inside the starter caused a ark on the armature causing the starter not to be working at 100% option 1 have a drain test done or 2 replace the starter the drain test will show how much amps its taking to spin the starter if its pulling a high amount of amps/votage to spin the start then replace starter

Brand new battery is dead with nothing left on. Bad ground?

Remove positive battery terminal from battery & put a 12 volt test light in line between cable & battery post. As long as 12 volt light is illuminated, you have a draw. Start pulling & re-installing fuses, one at a time, until you see it dim or go out. If it goes out, you found your draw. If it dims, slight draw, such as radio memory etc. if all else fails, make sure you know where they all go, then pull them all, and start putting back one at a time. When light comes on bright, you found the circuit causing the draw.

Unit has a draw somewhere that needs to be addressed. I have found the auto starts sometimes can cause this. But if the draw is through the negative side it could be tough. You should take it to the dealer and have them perform a draw test on the entire vehicle.
