How free is it turning over?ie do you think the timing belt is ok?has it got fuel to the engine?is there a spark to plugs[take a plug out and set it on the top of hole and watch if it sparks [blue]if it does not backfire then the timing should be ok.You dont tell me what first happened it must have had a problem ie a miss in the engine a rough idling etc if you want to come back to me on this then i will help you.adrian,,,,,,,,,

The truck sat for 2 years...when it runs(idles) it purred..it has to be a fuel thing but what is beyond me...all that is left is the fuel relay and spend $160.00 on a sending unit with the pump... I put the new tank on, bought a brand new 5 gallon gas can with new gas just in case. It is doing what it originally did from day 1 only worse now. Run decent and then die out. It is timed out to a t...wish it was that...got me daffy.

at this point i would check all fuel pipes, check for a small leak or a split pipe/bad joint etc. This engine is starving of fuel and mybe getting air in the fuel line, check the flexey pipes as well they might look ok but can be cracked inside.adrian,,,,,

Line your bottom crank/harmonic balancer up to tdc. check to make sure piston 1 rocker is at idle... between inlet and outlet valve compression.. mark on alloy distributor housing number one.... remove dizzy cap.. check to see where rotor button is facing....adjust if needed is only 1/2 or a 13mm bolt.. if it has point just make sure that the gap is a little larger then the thinkness of your thumb nail.. good luck

Try changing fuel pump relay.Passenger side firwall black box.

If I can hear the fuel pump, does that eliminate the relay? I am not a mechanic...just a poor man who can't afford one. Thak you for helping...it has me scratching my head. The sending unit had gunk all in the tubes..I cleaned all that ou, cleaned out the pump and replaced the screen, though that doesn't eliminate. Just hate to spend that money and be no closer.

the relay controls injectors unless its carburated.try spraying some starting fluid in where the air duct go into throttle body if it starts and then dies its fuel related, only 3 things you hanent replaced are relay ,fuel pressure regulator and injectors,if possible have a fuel pressure test performed

100 psi per cylinder is way too low--should be in the vicinity of 150-165 per cylinder
back firing indicates wrong firing order and as you have replaced the plugs etc check that you have the leads on the correct plugs in the correct order
the timing for the engine should be around the 10 degree btdc and not tdc

I have a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity-2.8 multi-port engine. I have replaced the fuel pump, the fuel filter, put a new distributor cap on, replaced the spark plugs and new wires. Changed the air and oil...

Sounds like something getting warm/hot as engine warms up. Could be the MAP sensor, Coil/Coil pack, Ignition Switch(not the key cylinder), or possibly the Oxygen Sensor.

Next time it does this, pull a plug wire out of the coil pack and hold it close to the tower, and have someone crank the engine to see if your still getting a spark.
Could also be a loose connector on the throttle body injection, or a broken wire.

My 1989 ford bronco will run for 15 minutes then just quit running have replaced fuel tank both fuel pumps and filter it's got 44 lbs pressure what else could it possibly be wrong

have you checked for ignition fire to the plugs after it dies? chances are the ignition control module is getting hot and shutting off the signal to the ignition coil.

maybe it's the timing chain, turn the crank with a socket untill #1 cylinder is at top dead center, pull off the distributer cap and check which plug wire is the rotor is at.if it's not #1 cylinder's plug wire, the timing chain has jumped.

It sounds like your problem may not be fuel. It could be the ignition coil, rotor or module. The fact that it quit right after you put fuel in the front tank is likely just a coincidence.

2.8 engine Would start when cool, but stall after

89 cierra? It should be DIS ignition so you can't have the timing too high. You said it has fuel and spark. Fuel pressure and injection pulse. Does it try to start if you spray carb cleaner into it?
