These may have problems with the Inner Tie Rod Bushings. The inner tie rods are up on the firewall behind the engine, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth (just enough to feel all the play) and see if the rods are loose.

Steering has to much slack in the wheel

The problem can be in the steering box or tie rod ends, but you need to get it repaired right away. The truck is not safe to drive like that.

How do I fix play in the steering?

This could be due to a number of causes, as the steering is a chain of linkages or joints:

-steering wheel securing nut loose
-steering shaft universal joint worn or loose
-steering box mountings worn or loose (common)
-tie rod inner ball joints worn or loose (if any)
-tie rod ends worn (most likely)

Jack up the front of the car both sides and secure it with axle stands or some other safe means, have someone hang on to the steering wheel, and waggle each road wheel in and out by gripping it at 9 and 3 o'clock. You should be able to feel the slack. Have another person use a strong flashlight to try to see where this is occurring.

You may need to take it to a front suspension shop as sometimes special tools are needed, and you will need a wheel alignment anyway.

Swerves alot while driving

Something seriously loose or worn:

- steering box mounts
- steering column universal joint or end clamp
- steering box inner ball joints
- tie rod ends
- outer ball joints
- wheel centre hub nut
- wheel stud nuts

A simple test is to jack up both front wheels and place the vehicle on axle stands. Then have someone hold the steering wheel, grab a front wheel at the 9-and-3 o'clock position, and shake it hard in and out. If you can feel slack or looseness, or the person holding the steering wheel can, you have a dangerous fault which should be fixed ASAP.

How do I remove the slack in the steering on a 1995 toyota 4runner

In rack and pinion steering, they are long and tube like to look at, the wear that takes place that causes play is the rack ends. You have to
take the boots off and unscrew the rack end, always fit new units .
With recirculating ball steering boxes, you adjust the end play on the sctor shaft on top of the box with the wheels up off the ground, make sure that there are no tight spots when you spin the steering wheel from lock to lock as you adjust the play out.

2.7L Engine
A/C & Alternator Belt

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  3. Loosen tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt.
  4. Rotate tensioner clockwise to allow enough slack to remove belt

To install:
  1. Install the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt on pulleys, tensioner in slack position, slip belt over idler last.
  2. Adjust drive belt tension.
  3. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  4. Lower vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4. Loosen the tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt.
  5. Rotate tensioner clockwise to allow enough slack to remove the belt

To install:
  1. With the tensioner in a slack position, install the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor/alternator belt on the pulleys. Slip the belt over the idler last.
  2. Adjust the drive belt tension.
  3. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  4. Lower the vehicle.

Power Steering Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  3. Remove the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  4. Loosen belt adjusting bolt. It is not necessary to loosen the pivot bolt on the power steering pump. There is a bushing incorporated into the power steering pump/bracket that allows it to pivot.
  5. Remove the power steering belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering belt on pulleys.
  2. Adjust drive belt tension.
  3. Install the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  4. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  5. Lower vehicle.

My 1982 Chevrolet blazer power steering is too soft and not good in traveling a high speed, how can i adjust it to become a little bit harder?

There is no adjustment on the power steering pump.If you have slack or a lack of response most likely you have a worn part such as tie rod end or idler arm.Low pressure in the power steering would cause the steering to be stiff , mostly at low speed.The faster you go the less need there is for power steering,for example turn off the engine while sitting in the driveway and see how difficult the wheel is to turn.You cand jack up a front wheel and check for slack in the steering components by trying to move the tire side to side and back and fourth.Good Luck!

How do i adjust steering linkage so there isnt as much play in it

The only adjustment you can make would be the thrust bearing in the steering box. This is the bolt with the straight slot on top and it has a nut at the base. You would raise the front wheels to get the weight off, and then have an assistant move the steering wheel slightly left, slightly right. Unscrew the base nut and tighten the slotted stem bolt down until you get less slop in the steering gears.
There should be some play.

The tierod ends, both inner and outer should be tight. The threads you see on the rods are for Front-end Alignment only, and are not meant to tighten any slack. There should be no slack. You have a pivot arm on the opposite side of the frame from the steering box. The bushing in this arm can wear out, check for slack. It can be changed independently without affecting alignment.

Everyone has a method. Mine is to keep 1 wheel on the ground and jack the weight off the other so I can feel the play side to side. Remember to check your Balljoints while you do the linkage. It is possible to have 1 bad tierod end causing all the problems.

I have a 97 K1500 with some loose steering issues. I have replaced everything that has anything to do with steering except steering gear and powerstearing pump and it all helped a lot but it still seems to...

Have the front end alignment checked as it may the cause of wandering. With the truck parked and the steering centered, but the engine running, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while watching the left front wheel. It should respond to the steering action without any observable slack. Have someone watch both front wheels while doing this and see if there is slack between the two wheels. Any slack here is indicative of slop in the cross-wheel coupling. Hope this helps!

I have a 1989 chevy K-5 blazer, and sometimes when turning I go to straighten the wheel and they dont respond right away. Causing me to over steer in the other direction. Is this in the steering box?

Check your steering kuckle located above gear box on shaft that goes to steering wheel, while some one turn's wheel a little back & forth and check for slack, Also check front end linkage for looseness, don't forget wheel bearings.

Replacing the light on the steering wheel buttons?

The switch has to be replaced, the bulbs are not serviced seperately. On some of the vehicles, you could pull the the switch out far enough to access the connector and change it from the front, but be careful, if there is not enough slack in the harness, the steering wheel has to come off, along with the rear cover on the wheel, to get enough slack in the harness to remove the switches. This was a design change around 2004 or 2005.
