Ihave a 1996 GMC 2w/d . My transmission wont go into lock up. When I hit a slight incline it seems to go into neutral . Could this be t/c problem or 4th gear?

The torque converter could be giving you problems, it should lock up. If it is locking up and you still have this symptom, then the 4th gear clutch could be worn out and is slipping badly.

If the transmission fluid level is topped off, and it's ok, then I would look at a transmission rebuild on this one.

Do you have any transmission codes on this?

What's causing transmission problems?

You have a ground problem. Since it starts battery to engine ground is good. You need to check or add ground wires from the battery to the body, from the engine to body, and I put an extra ground wire from the transmission to the engine.

Gear shift lever wont go into park and ignition switch won't turn all of the way off.

Sounds like you probably bent the "detent" in the transmission. You'd need to drop the trans pan and replace the linkage pertaining to this.

Hi there,

You definately have a transmission problem.

When was the last time the transmission fluid was completely replaced? Trans fluid is CRITICAL for proper shifting operation. The measuring of trans fluid is also critical and must be measured in a certain way (engine warm, selector moved through all gears, then finally left in N, while checking for hot level).

Your trans also has a fail-safe function - when a fault is detected, the trans will go into "LIMP" mode. This still allows driving, but will usually remain in 3rd gear. In this instance, the "N" (Neutral) light on your dash may also flash.

If you are technically inclined, I can provide your with instructions on how to check your trans computer for fault codes...

Let me know...

My 1996 GMC Yukon 4x4 transmission will only drive in 1st and 2nd

It will take off from a stop in overdrive but as soon as it shifts into 3rd at about 30 miles per hour it jumps into neutral? If yes, you have a burnt 3/4 clutch. The transmission will need rebulit. Cost of about 1600 dollars.

Vibration when idling in drive

check your pulley's. Sounds like one of them are bad and causing movement which where the vibrations coming from. A friend of mine had the same problem, his was the fan pulley. It could be moved inward and outward a little but enough to cause the engine to vibrate. The bearings were going out. check it out and let us know what you come up with.

Transmission wont shift into any forward gears or reverse gear on my 1996 gmc sierra 1500 4wd

4WD! the transfer case is not stuck in neutral is it? Fluid levels are good? Have you noticed a decrease in mileage or power prior to this problem? If no then time to take it in for service it sounds like. Transmission fluid is not consummed, so if it leaked out then you may be able to fill it up and get the leak fixed, if too late then its a rebuild on the tranny.
