Then something is wrong. Either you have the wrong hose installed or it is installed incorrectly. You may also have a motor mount broken especially it this suddenly started and you did not replace the hose.

03 nissan xterra that over heats when idling. have replace radiator, thermostat as well as all the hoses. my check ingen lightis on and the code reads knock sensor faulty. are theses two seperate problems...


First problem I will tackle is do you have a viscous fan hub on the fan connecting it to the water pump. If you do then replace it as it is not working at idle and drawing air through the radiator . IT will be spinning but if you carefully place a finger on the back of the blades you will be able to stop it very easily. This means that it is slipping and useless. T check for a blown head gasket remove the radiator cap and see if there are bubbles in the radiator or the water tends to bleach out occasionally . IF so have a compression test done to prove head gasket or cracked head. Lastly if an knock sensor is indicated by the codes have it fixed as that sensor helps in controlling the air /fuel mixture and timing to prevent detonation and engine damage. That rattling noise you hear under acceleration

Replace water pump in 1991 318

      Follow these steps and it will help. But nothing is as good as a Video. YouTube would help at that. Drain the radiator by twisting the drain plug at the base of the radiator in a counterclockwise direction with a wrench until the radiator fluid begins to exit from the center of the plug. Tighten the plug back into the radiator after the radiator is drained.

      Remove the four bolts from the center of the fan blades with a wrench then pull the blades off of the water pump.

      Disconnect the intake manifold hose, the heater hose and the lower radiator hose from the water pump. The intake manifold hose is located on the right side of the top of the water pump. The heater hose is just to the left of the intake manifold hose, and the lower radiator hose is located at the bottom of the water pump. Each of the three hoses attaches to the water pump with a band clamp. Loosen the screw on each band clamp with a flat head screwdriver then pull the hoses off of the water pump.

      Disconnect the alternator brackets from the water pump. The alternator uses an upper and lower bracket, each of which is secured to the water pump with a single bolt. The opposite end of each bracket holds the alternator in place with a bolt. Loosen the bolts which hold the alternator to the upper and lower brackets, then rotate the alternator towards the engine to slacken the alternator belt. Pull the belt off of the front of the alternator, then remove the bolts which hold the upper and lower brackets to the water pump with a wrench.

      Remove the bolts which secure the water pump to the front of the engine then pull the pump off of the engine.

      Smear gasket sealer over both sides of the replacement water pump gasket then push one side of the gasket onto the back of the water pump. Position the water pump onto the front of the engine then install each of the water pump's retaining bolts with a wrench.

      Position the upper and lower alternator brackets against the water pump, then install the brackets' retaining bolts through each bracket and into the water pump with a wrench.

      Place the alternator's belt into the groove of the alternator's pulley then pull the alternator away from the engine to tighten the belt. Tighten the bolt which secures the bottom of the alternator to the lower alternator bracket with a wrench.

      Position the fan blades onto the tip of the water pump then install each of the four fan blade bolts with a wrench.

      Slide the intake manifold, heater and radiator hoses onto the water pump, then tighten each hose clamp with a flat head screwdriver.

      Remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze, then install the radiator cap.

Is it difficult to change out the radiator fan, or bracket. I noticed when idling the fan turns on and a bad rattling noise is made and then stops when fan cut off.


It seems that the radiator fan is hitting against the frame and so there is noise and vibration when the fan comes on. Shut down engine and check on the blades, see if there was any damage that would have changed the alignment or postion of the fan. If so you will need to remove and reset the fan. If the bearings or blades are seen to be faulty , replace them before the radiator is damaged.

Section 303-03: Cooling, Engine 1997 Explorer, Mountaineer Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Radiator - 4.0L Removal
  1. NOTE: Refer to following illustrations.
    Drain the cooling system by removing the radiator cap (8100) and attaching a 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) inside diameter hose to the draincock nipple, located at the lower rear corner of the radiator tank. Then, open the radiator draincock (8115) and allow the coolant to flow through the hose into a suitable container.
  1. Loosen hose clamps at throttle body and engine air cleaner assembly. Remove air cleaner outlet tube and position aside.
  1. Remove radiator overflow hose from the radiator, disconnect two hose locators at top of radiator and position hose aside.
  1. Remove two fans shroud bolts. Lift the fan shroud out of the lower retaining clips and position it on the fan blade.
  1. Position upper and lower radiator hose clamps, remove hose from radiator and position it on the fan blade.
  1. Disconnect the two transmission cooling lines from the oil cooler fittings on the radiator, install protective caps over lines and position aside.
  1. Remove two upper radiator bolts.
  1. Tilt the radiator back (rearward) approximately 25 mm (one inch) and lift directly upward, clear of the radiator support bracket and the fan blade.
Installation
  1. Position the radiator into engine compartments, make sure that mountings on both tanks are inserted into radiator support brackets. Install radiator retaining bolts. Tighten to 6-8 - (54-70 lb-in).
  1. Remove protective caps from cooler lines. Connect the two transmission cooling lines at the oil cooler fittings on radiator. Tighten to 16-24 - (12-17 lb-ft).
  1. Install upper radiator hose and position hose clamp. Tighten to 3 - (26 lb-in).
  1. Install lower radiator hose and position hose clamp. Tighten to 3 - (26 lb-in).
  1. Position fan shroud in lower retaining clips and install upper bolts. Torque to 6-8 - (54-70 lb-in).
  1. Position radiator overflow hose, connect to radiator and locators.
  1. Position air cleaner outlet tube to throttle body and air cleaner assembly. Tighten to 2-3 - (18-27 lb-in).
  1. Fill the cooling system; refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

The water pump can be removed and installed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped).

  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Drain cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling found under Cooling System, Service and Repair.
  3. Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. WARNING: CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS ARE USED ON MOST COOLING SYSTEM HOSES. WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING, USE ONLY TOOLS DESIGNED FOR SERVICING THIS TYPE OF CLAMP, SUCH AS SPECIAL CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER 6094). SNAP-ON CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER HPC-20) MAY BE USED FOR LARGER CLAMPS. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING CONSTANT TENSION CLAMPS. CAUTION: A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.
  4. Remove upper radiator hose clamp and hose at radiator.
  5. The thermal viscous fan drive is attached (threaded) to the water pump hub shaft. Remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from water pump by turning mounting nut counterclockwise as viewed from front. Threads on viscous fan drive are RIGHT HAND. A Snap-On 36 MM Fan Wrench (number SP346 from Snap-On Cummins Diesel Tool Set number 2017DSP) can be used. Place a bar or screwdriver between water pump pulley bolts to prevent pulley from rotating. Do not attempt to remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle at this time.
  6. 6. If water pump is being replaced, do not unbolt fan blade assembly from thermal viscous fan drive.
  7. Remove fan shroud attaching hardware (two bolts at bottom-two clips at top).
  8. Remove fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle as a complete unit.
  9. After removing fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly, do not place thermal viscous fan drive in horizontal position. If stored horizontally, silicone fluid in viscous fan drive could drain into its bearing assembly and contaminate lubricant.
  10. Do not remove water pump pulley bolts at this time.
  11. Remove accessory drive belt as follows: The drive belt is equipped with a spring loaded automatic tensioner. Relax tension from belt by rotating tensioner clockwise (as viewed from front). When all belt tension has been relaxed, remove accessory drive belt.
  12. 12. Remove four water pump pulley-to-water pump hub bolts and remove pulley from vehicle.
  13. Remove lower radiator hose clamp and remove lower hose at water pump.
  14. Remove heater hose clamp and heater hose from heater hose coolant return tube.
  15. Loosen heater hose coolant return tube mounting bolt and remove tube from water pump. Discard the old tube O-ring.
  16. Remove seven water pump mounting bolts.
  17. Loosen clamp at water pump end of bypass hose. Slip bypass hose from water pump while removing pump from vehicle. Discard old gasket. CAUTION: Do not pry water pump at timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.

INSTALLATION

  1. Clean gasket mating surfaces.
  2. Using a new gasket, install water pump to engine as follows: Guide water pump nipple into bypass hose as pump is being installed. Install water pump bolts. Tighten water pump mounting bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
  3. Position bypass hose clamp to bypass hose.
  4. Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing chain case/cover.
  5. Install a new O-ring to the heater hose coolant return tube. Coat the new O-ring with antifreeze before installation.
  6. Install coolant return tube and its mounting bolt to engine. Be sure the slot in tube bracket is bottomed to mounting bolt. This will properly position return tube.
  7. Connect radiator lower hose to water pump.
  8. Connect heater hose and hose clamp to coolant return tube.
  9. Install water pump pulley. Tighten bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) torque. Place a bar or screwdriver between water pump pulley bolts to prevent pulley from rotating.
  10. Relax tension from belt tensioner. Install accessory drive belt.
  11. CAUTION: When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, the belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. Refer to Illustration above for correct belt routing. The correct belt with correct length must be used.
  12. Position fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to vehicle as a complete unit.
  13. Install fan shroud.
  14. Install fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to water pump shaft.
  15. Fill cooling system.
  16. Connect battery negative cable.
  17. Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks.

If you are mechanically inclined, its as easy as burger+fries....
1. Drain the coolant into a container.
2. Remove the upper/lower hoses from radiator.
3. Remove cooling fan(s) belt/blade.
4. Remove the radiator bolts wherever they are on the frame.
5.Replace the radiator, connect back all hoses and bolts, belt, fans/blade.
6. Refill radiator.
7. Start your car, check for leaks.

Radiator Aluminum Core, Crossflow — 3.8L (Base) and 4.6L Engines
Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system as described. Disconnect upper radiator hose (8260) and lower radiator hose (8286) and radiator overflow hose (8075) from the radiator (8005). Disconnect the transmission oil cooler inlet and outlet lines from the radiator.
  1. Remove cooling fan motor,fan blade (8600) and fan shroud (8146) assembly as described.
  1. Remove radiator upper bracket retaining bolts and remove bracket. Lift radiator from vehicle.
Installation
  1. Position the radiator into the vehicle. Install upper brackets and tighten bolts securely.
  1. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission oil cooler fittings.
  1. Install cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud assembly as described.
Engine Cooling Fan Motor, Fan Blade and Fan Shroud Assembly, Electrical Removal
  1. Disconnect (pull apart) the male-female cooling fan motor wiring connector at the side of the fan shroud (8146). Remove the male terminal connector retaining clip from the fan shroud mounting tab.
  1. Remove two fan shroud upper retaining bolts at the radiator tanks.
  1. Lift cooling fan motor/fan blade (8600)/fan shroud assembly past radiator (8005), disengaging fan shroud from two lower retaining clips.
Installation
  1. Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
  1. Tighten fan shroud retaining bolts to 5.2-7.2 Nm (46-63 lb-in).

    Changing the water pump on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6


    WATER PUMP
    The water pump is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case/cover.

    A gasket is used as a seal between the water pump and timing chain case/cover.

    If water pump is replaced because of bearing/shaft damage, or leaking shaft seal, the mechanical cooling fan assembly should also be inspected. Inspect for fatigue cracks, loose blades, or loose rivets that could have resulted from excessive vibration. Replace fan if any of these conditions are found. Also check condition of the thermal viscous fan drive. Refer to Viscous Fan Drive in this group.

    The water pump can be removed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped)

    REMOVAL
    Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
    Drain cooling system. Refer to Draining Cooling System in this group.
    Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse.

    The thermal viscous fan drive is attached (threaded) to the water pump hub shaft. Remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from water pump by turning mounting nut counterclockwise as viewed from front. Threads on viscous fan drive are RIGHT HAND. Using special tool spanner wrench 6958 with adapter pins 8346 and a suitable fan wrench loosen the fan drive Viscous Fan and Fan Drive Do not attempt to remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle at this time.
    WARNING: CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS ARE USED ON MOST COOLING SYSTEM HOSES. WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING, USE ONLY TOOLS DESIGNED FOR SERVICING THIS TYPE OF CLAMP, SUCH AS SPECIAL CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER 6094) SNAP-ON CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER HPC-20) MAY BE USED FOR LARGER CLAMPS.     Remove water pump and gasket. Discard gasket.
    INSTALLATION
    Clean gasket mating surfaces.
    Using a new gasket, position water pump and install mounting bolts as shown. Water Pump Installation - Tighten water pump mounting bolts to 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.) torque.
    Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing chain case/cover.
    Connect radiator lower hose to water pump.
    Relax tension from belt tensioner Automatic Belt Tensioner - Install drive belt
    CAUTION: When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. Refer to Belt Routing for correct belt routing. Or, refer to the Belt Routing Label located in the engine compartment. The correct belt with correct length must be used.

    Position fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to vehicle as a complete unit.
    Be sure the upper and lower portions of the fan shroud are firmly connected. All air must flow through the radiator.
    Install two fan shroud-to-radiator nuts Fan Shroud Mounting Hardware
    Be sure of at least 25 mm (1.0 inches) between tips of fan blades and fan shroud.
    Install fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to water pump shaft.
    Fill cooling system. Refer to Refilling the Cooling System in this group.
    Connect negative battery cable.
    Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks
