Basically the same as if you needed a tune up. backfires, sluggish, hard to start, won't start now power.etc. Of course it could be something else like plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, sensor, etc. Usually you end up replacing everything else and then you find out it is the timing belt/chain. You can always use a timing light to see if it is out of time, as sometimes if is slips you con adjust the distributor. Hope this helped Tim

There are no symptoms. It will just suddenly break. However it really does not matter as your Cavalier has a timing chain and not a belt. A timing chain that needs replacing will be noisy and your engine will not perform as it should because the chain may have jumped a tooth.

Backfiring out the exhaust pipes is a classic symptom of camshaft timing out of time ... meaning you probably have a timing chain or belt that either jumped one or more teeth, or the cross ribs came off the belt in certain areas of the timing belt. Gear driven camshafts hardly ever get out of time, but timing chains can, and timing belts are the worst offenders by far for that problem!

What are the symtoms of timing chain failer Does it turn off while driving or motor shakes.

If the timing belt were broken, the car would not be driving at all. If those codes weren't confused with another symptom it could be the car needs a tune up. You should think of when the last time plugs, wires, air filter were replaced. If they're pretty new, it could mean a cracked cam shaft sprocket has the engine out of time. Honestly, a full tune up would be cheaper than paying a mechanic to tear down and close up the engine. Good luck!

Often change timing belt

I don't know of an Eldorado that uses a belt. They use a timing chain.
Cars that use a belt will not run when the belt breaks.

Replaced timing belt on '87 Caravelle, now will not idle up and runs very rough

Have you double-checked the engine timing with a timing light to see whether everything came together properly? Your symptoms sound like the head might also have shifted when you slipped off the old belt or the new timing belt may have jumped a tooth when you first restarted the engine. Either way, a mismatch between the actual position of the valves and the spark sequence would cause a profound lack of power and / or symptoms like backfiring and other issues.
If your timing is way off, the right way to fix things would be to take the belt off again and move the head one gear forward or back from where it was. I would recommend against using the timing advance/****** of the distributor to try to reduce these symptoms until you got your primary timing issues resolved. Right now, you probably haven't damaged anything in your valve train, but extended operation with the engine not in sync with itself will put significant strain on some of the components.

Hard starting, uneven idle, engine wild,

Hi, Well if you haven't gotten them in a while, it's probably time for new spark plugs. Also clean the fuel injectors with fuel injector cleaner. Found at the parts store or Walmart. Also you may need a new timing belt. As all of the symptoms you have together point to it. Hope this helps.

Honda Accord 2002 Engine does not start but makes like fireworks noise. It's a backfire problem. Battery is ok.

I would check the cam timing. I would suspect the timing belt may have gone bad. The symptoms you are having are common when you have a timing belt go bad. The only other thing that will give these symptoms is failure of certain ignition system components.

Have 62,000 miles and am being told i need 60,000 mile service $500 and timing belt replaced another $500. this seems a little excessive?

Timing belt can be done cheaper than that, shop around - the 60,000 mile service is a FULL service, all fluids are changed, everything is tested - it is very important, probably the most important service a car will have - but $1000 is extortion! - shop around, ask your friends where they got the best deal on servicing.
I'd say $50 for the belt, $100 for the fluids oil etc, $300 labor charge - servicing is a striaghtforward task - empty old fluid, throw away oil filter, swap cambelt, fit new filter, refill the fluids, run diagnostics, test drive, back to customer, shouldn't cost $1000 for $150 of parts/fluids and 3 hours work...
