I could be a flat spot in the TPS sensor on the throttle body doing that

The tps is a reostat with windings. If a winding gets burnt it will not register the voltage to the computer so fuel is sent to the injectors. It is so minute the spot that is you may only hit that certain spot once in awhile. Go to any search engine typing in TPS repair or go to this website that show great detail on how to check a TPS

92 4Runner automatic, runs great, put in drive, start down the road and at about 1850rpms cuts off.

Things to check first are fuel pressure and spark. Rig up something you can watch during a driveability (road) test. if neither of the two quits working when the engine dies, check for correct ignition timing (and advance) and injector pulses at the injectors.since the engine idles, the problem is probably not a tired engine, but possibly a sketchy sensor (crankshaft or camshaft position), engine computer, or spark controller. Not so expensive to replace, but no fun to troubleshoot.

Car starts and cuts off in seconds.check nozzle and there,s no sign of it receiving gas.

can you hear fuel pump running for 5 seconds when you turn key on? You shuold have 40 psi of fuel presure.
What happens if you step on gas as the engine starts ( like up to 2000 rpms)?

5.3 L Missing and Rough Idle Intermittently

i have a 2001 chevy z-71 5.3L. I keep getting a random/multiple misfire code for cylinder 1 . I have replaced plugs, wires, coil pack(only on #1 cylinder)., and fuel pump. I still keep getting the cylinder 1 misfire code. I put truck on a scanner and watched the cylinders. # 1 misfires at idle but quickly stops misfiring at around 1000 rpms. you can here the engine miss at idle but truck runs great on road . anyone else ever had this problem?

Fuel presure @ idle is 70, reg connected with new regulator

fuel pressure is too high. Should be 40 to 45.
You intermittant no start may be a bad crank sensor or hall effect sensor.

No power when hit the gas

The fuel presure should be at least 60- 66 psi key on engine off, and then drop some when started, if it doesn't go any higher than 50 psi that would explain your backfire concern. If it is low then the fuel pump is weak. I have also seen soot on the little wires inside the Mass Airflow Sensor cause a concern like this.
