2004 Mercury Sable LS Premium w/ 65K miles. I was in a drive thru and when I turned the car to a sharp left I heard a loud gringing noise. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Not too hard to replace just greasy. The bearing probably has a flat spot on it caused by lack of grease. If you don't replace it, it could ruin the wheel shaft. Sometime when you put a car on a lift and turn the steering wheel it won't make a sound because the weight of the car is not on the wheels.

Thank you! I'm actually very ignorant when it comes to these things but I can tell when something is wrong. I'll have to take it somewhere to get fixed as I'm 8 months pregnant

It sounds like Wheel bearing issues, if you have ABS the light will come on because of it, but my knowledge on mercury is also the rack and pinion (steering box) always had problems in it

from the left??? passenger or driver side... this maybe a CV boot problem depending on what side you are speaking of. A CV would be the Ujoint for front wheel drives

2001 mercury sable ls premium w/24v engine what tranny?

You should be able to see an identification tag on top of the bell housing.Look under the hood where tanny and engine meet and it should ne right there on the top.
The top line will be something like PNB-CA or PNA-EZ
The second line is the model and it will be something like 2F1P-AA.
The very bottom line is the serial number on left and model number on the right.
You can also look on the door plate and find the bottom line look for the letter under TR it will be L for AX4S and X for 4F50N (AX4N)
Although I have seen these be wrong so try and get the number off of the plate.

2000 sable wont go into gear

No quick fix. If you are lucky, it is just the flexplate snapped loose from the torque converter. There is usually a door that you take off to access the 4 bolts that hold the flex plate to the converter. Remove that door to see if the bolts have sheared off.
