Question about 1997 Volkswagen Cabrio

1 Answer

The plastic door strip along the side of my 97 Golf Cabrio came partly away. It looked awful and got worse. In the end I removed the whole thing and tried to spruce up the plastic retaining clips that had been the cause of the problem. My problem now is that I can't get the strip to stay flush to the door I have tried refurbishing the clips, adding double sided sticky tapes, even covering the pushins with blu-tac followed by no-more nails! Any advice or similar experience out there please? The car is looking ultra dodgy with the strip missing!

  • Thanks Rob, I got some new retaining clips but wasn't sure if they would hold without a specialist adhesive so your answer is ust what I needed. And it proves that, like always, it's all in the prep work!

Make sure the strip and the door are clean from any dirt and oil use a wax stripper and or bug and tar remover then rinse with warm soapy water dry and let stand for about an hour. then apply a 3M VHB - very high bond double face clear tape - u can check with your local sign shop they can order this and usually get it in a day or two - they may even have a roll on hand you only need enough for the strip. Make sure it is 3M VHB - it is expensive but it works.

How do you remove interior rear side panels to remove the speakers on 03 Toyota prerunner ext cab

Make sure that any door rubbers are removed off the plastic trim.
Being very careful, grab a hold of front or back of trim and lift away from panel. These are clipped onto the panels with plastic clips,
Sometimes they break , but most of the time they come away just fine.
Dont pull too hard or the whole trim might snap

3. push fabric panel (edge of door opener plastic cover-at hinged end of chrome handle) to allow uncliping of edge of plastic cover (top rt & lwr rt (for passenger side) of plastic cover)

5. remove switch panel-gently pry with wide non maring pry bar (cover wide blade screwdriver using cloth) do rear of sw panel 1st (don't pry front edge)
6. slide switch panel toward rear to allow removal

The catch on the glove box lid on a vw golf 2001 is broken how do i fix it?

You need to replace the whole glove box door. Pry the panel on the right side of the dash off, remove the t25 screw, remove the 3 t20 screws along the bottom of the glove box, and the t20 screws that you can see inside the glove box. This will loosen it enough to pull the whole glove box loose. Then you need to remove the damper by prying the little plastic pin out. Then remove the bracket it secures to that has a t20 screw in it. There are 2 plastic pins in the hinges that need to be popped out, once this is done, the door will come off. Reassembly is the reverse.
If the pins are difficult to reinstall, file the new glove box door hinge holes with a round file. I usually shoot a little oil into the damper too, just to make operation easier.

How do I get driver side door panel off to get to electric switch panel? I have a bad window lock switch.

There are bayonet type retainers and screws that hold the door panels on along the edges, in the arm rest also. The best thing to do is run your fingers along the edge to make sure there are no screws if there are remove them. You can also buy a inexpensive tool at most auto parts stores to remove the door panels. Pry out along the edges until the door retainers pop out then remove the screws in the arm rest and also by the handle. Once the panel is loose you will have to remove the rod from the handle by pushing the small plastic clip away and pulling the rod out. If the panel has never been removed there is soundproofing inside that will have to be removed, it's just plastic glued to the door. Install in reverse order. Good luck.

How do I disalarm my 1997 VW Cabrio Alarm?

I have a similiar problem occasionally. In my 97 vw, it usually happens when the battery terminals are loose. I just take them off, clean them and reconnect and the problem goes away for several months.

Lock/unlock pushbutton is sunk back into the door panel

Above the door handle you have the part you pul the door closed with, if you look to the bottom of it you will see a long piece of plastic, you need to lift this out , under that are two screws, take them out, then look for the little lite located close to the edge of the door, this light will just pop out, behind it you will find another screw, remove it, now look in the round heater hole located towards the top inner part of the door pannel and you will find a little plastic plug, with long nose plyers gently grab it and pull it will have to remove the plastic molding around the handle, just use a flat head screw driver and pop it out
Now all you have to do is grab hold of the whole door panel and lift and wiggle it up, it is held in place by plastic hooks, don't worry to much as they are pretty sterdy, you must becareful not to move the panel to far away at first cause there are plugs you will need to undo, it is all really very simple if you take your time.
All the door panels come off the same way. good luck and have fun, I have had the same broken button and many other things, just today I had all the plastic trim around the floor and roof off and the whole head liner out to repair my sunroof moter.

1999 GMC Suburban - how to install dr side power window motor/arm

The window should be put in a closed position.
Hidden screws behind buttons of the same color as panel should be opened up using a pick or small screwdiver.
Pry the lower part of the panel away from the door using a paint scraper, The lower half of this panel is usually held in with plastic fastners. When pulled hard enough they will release. These fastners are replacable you can buy them at your local body shop. After releasing all plastic fastners lift door panel off door lock in an upward thrust. Be careful not to pull to far away from door due to wire harnesses and speaker wires ect.. These can be uncliped to remkove whole panel. To operate window you can replug window harness wires in order to bring the window into the proper position to remove bolts that hold it into place. Carefully position glass in upward position and duct tape in place.
The regulator is held in place by three or more bolts.
Remove regulator.
Compare your new part to the existing window regulator.
Installation is reversal of removal.
