Your Coolant isn't circulating well enough is usually the case. I would replace the pump. furthermore, make sure there isn't a bunch of **** clogging your grill.

Temp guage starts to warm up but when I run the heat the guage bottoms out no matter how many miles i drive

so you want more heat in extreme cold? block part of the radiator off with a cardbpoard sheet..not more than half of it.. old truckers trick.. some school busses use a snap-on grille cover..it stops the very cold air from cooling the radiator too much and not warming the motor enough to be of any good..

Transmission

I can only imagine how cold it is, I suffer when it gets down to 60F. When they showed ice road truckers, their trucks are actually heated because the oil become frozen in the transmission. you also may require different grade of oil with an anti freeze additive, different to the summer, If 1 of your bans have broken due to freezing to the drum, no heating will help, the band acts as a brake and the gears allow the drive to go out the drive-line, no brake no drive, same in each gear, just a different drum brake same clutch drives them all, same cure remove the transmission, sorry

2002 expedition heater dont work in front @ all

Would to get in a warm workshop and head under the dash as i think well sure their is a problem with the flap over the top of the heater core rad ,could be a vacumn pipe perished so its not opening or the operating mechanism but if the worst came to the worst case scenario i would hold it open with a spring or a elastic band ,nothing worse than a cold motor especially in ice road trucker land

how cold is that in real temperature scales like centigrade please ,watch ice road truckers and learn --- put a piece of cardboard in front of the rad to block the air flow ,that will do it

1999 A4: glow plug replacement...

Its very similar to replacing a spark plug. Unless you have a scheduled maintenance interval you just leave them alone.

If you are having problems you test each glowplug in the following way. Remove the glowplug from the engine. Get car jumper cables and put the negative wire on the casing away from the threads. Touch the positive cable to the top structure of the glowplug causing sparks. This is of course having the battery cables connected to the battery appropriately.

You can melt the glowplug. But if the glowplug resists heating up, resists glowing, it is bad. Just ordinary small gauge wiring will melt. You need jumper cables and even they can get hot. Thats all truckers have done for the big rigs.

put a piece of cardboard in front of radiator to stop airflow through it ,and then engine will run a bit warmer.havent you watched ice road truckers.also make sure you have a least 50% antifreeze and if temperatures drop below -20c then use neat antifreeze,as it sounds to me its freezing up with wind chill factor
