Doesnt the PCM supply the ground

  • Richard Scordino Sep 02, 2010

Grounding signal comes from computer except for starter relay that uses a direct ground. However... you need to check that the ground signal is actually getting to the relay you are checking as often chattering of a relay is caused by a poor connection which can be either at the relay spade or where the wire to it is connected to the connector end. If your computer has any ground leads (pigtails to the fender) make sure those are good as well There are at least six ground points on the engine. Make sure they all are clean and secure.

All grounds seem clean and tight, when I unplug the MAP sensor the relays quit clicking, not sure if this is relevant or not?

I need to know all the fault codes you have received on testing. I really doubt that any sensor is taking out the computer, worked this type of repair for 20+years and have never seen that happen, not once.

Under the hood on the passenger side just above the battery. It's in your Power Distribution Center (PDC) just above your battery. Once you take the lid off, a diagram is shown on the inside of the lid. The auto shutdown relay location will be shown there. It will be identified as "ASD"

You can try swapping it out with one of the other ones to see if it makes any difference. If not next suspect would be ECM.

The CPS is one of the first places to start, but remember that the signal goes thru the ECM first, which ultimately supplies power to the coil, I've had to replace the ECM on my 96 Grand Cherokee 4.0 3 times. The dealer wanted to replace the crack and cam sensors, but it was only the computer that was bad.  Sorry I cant give you any definitive answers but I did get it to turn over when I hit the computer with a wrench!

You may have a bad crank sensor or PCM, or ignition module. Or you may have a ign or PCM fuse that popped.

1995 jeep grand cheerokee laredo 6 cyl. randomly dies then takes anywhere from five minutes to hours to restart

The only component I know of, that shuts a Jeep off while idling or driving 40mph down the road, is a bad crank sensor. Usually when it starts going bad, it will sporadically shut off, like yours does. Eventually, it will just die and the Jeep will not start at all. Have it tested and replaced, if necessary.
