Question about Dodge Neon

1996 Dodge Neon. When the motor gets hot, the car shuts down as though it's not getting fuel. When it cools down it will start up again and run until it gets hot. The air bag light comes on sometimes and the speedometer doesn't work right. When I first put it into reverse, it bangs into gear then seems to shift ok. I can put up with that but not the fuel problem. I changed the coil pack and cleaned out the fuel regulator and accumulator.

The easiest thing to check first is the body ground cable, is it there, is it loose, is it broken? take it off, clean the connections and reinstall it. Do the dash lights or interior lights go out when the engine dies? What do you mean that the speedometer doesn't work right? Does it bounce, Bang going into reverse intimates it has an automatic transmission, and you are driving the car when it shuts down. Des the transmission do anything strange while driving? If driving and the engine shuts down, does the car come to a stop somewhat slowly or abruptly? If abruptly, it may be the transmission going into two gears, stalling the engine.
It is most likely an electrical problem that needs more diagnosis. Is this a rust belt car, is there rust under the fuse box or where wires go from front to back in the car, or in the driver or passenger side firewall or floorboard? Does it make any difference if the headlights or parking lights are on or off? Does the car have air conditioning, if so does it make a difference if it is on or off?
It may even be the ECU quitting when hot, does the problem go away, or take longer to happen if you put an ice pack on the ECU?

Changing spark plugs "and all that" fixed this man's car.

sounds like you should start by dropping the pan and changing the filter, put cheap fluid in it or reuse the old fluid if its not too bad bring it to a shop and have a transmission flush performed with a good flush machine your valve body is sticking and this should clear things up please rate -jeff

If auto choke, chk yhat for opening.
Msnifold vac fluctuating or thats just the range? Sounds a little high. neck time you start the motor, give the throttle a snap and vck the coke play position Cold running the choke should be 1/4 - 1/3 open. If you need info on how to adjust let me know Hot, or at operating temp, choke should be wide open. Good luck.

The code reads: ignition coil #1 primary circuit. If the coil pack has been replaced, then it is likely the PCM (computer package) is defective and needs to be replaced. That circuit is driven directly by the PCM. This information was taken from a '96 Dodge Caravan service manual (3.3 V6 engine with coil pack ignition system), and should be similar. If your engine uses a distributor instead of a coil pack, then the above code doesn't apply. Even if it does apply, the code implies a 'miss' situation, not complete engine stoppage unless the computer operates the 'automatic shut down relay'??

Got 2000 dodge neon will start when cold run good but when motor warms up won't start


Nikki is the engine light on, are there any codes,have you had a tune up or any other work done lately.when you say it won't start when warm(do you mean engine will not turn over, or does engine turn and refuses to fire.
If I had to guess failing fuel pump, they tend not to build fuel pressure when ran a while(warmed up) and when left to cool build somewhat better pressure.

Wipers work about 5 seconds then stop until engine is shut off about an hour. Then repeat.


Sounds like the windshield wiper motor is getting too hot. The wait an hour is waiting for that to cool down.
The wiper motor is located usually under the hood, on the firewall on the passenger side.
You should be able to feel the wiper motor getting too hot when the wipers are turned on.

IT is most likely the thermastat but i would not suggest driving it until it fixed as that could cause the head to crack witch costs around $213 - $250

1996 plymouth neon 2.0 sohc starts up fine, runs good untill it warms up about 20 min, to 1/2 hour then starts losing power, starts spiting and spudering and when giving gas wants to quit? then it...


well its a long shot but it could be your catalytic converter is going bad or is clogged, i have seen them get so hott they glow red. this sometimes can be seen at night by looking under your car after it has ran to the point of stalling and dieing,, if thats the problem the car cant exhaust creating back pressure that robbs power and can cause your car to die.. after it cools the metal shrinks back and the car will runn again untill it getts hott.. i hope this helps

96 Dodge Neon Cuts out while driving


Had similar problem with 97 Plymouth Neon.  It turn out that the Crank Shaft Position Sensor was failing,  since I replaced it the car has been running smooth with no problems.

Cuts off in warm weather after about 10 miles


Don't rule out fuel pump. Had a 95 do the same, ran great when cool in morning then when it got hot in afternoon, it would quit. Wait 15-20 minutes & go again, sometimes got me home, other times a few more miles until it cooled down again. Luckily I had access to a fuel pressure gauge. Cool in morning had 49 psi, when it quit, 2 psi. Wait 20 minutes, 49 psi again. If you can drive it around until it starts to act up then run into a repair shop for fuel pressure test it will confirm it. If not, they may need it all day to monitor the fuel pressure & confirm it is pump. If your a gambler, change it & fuel filter. One thing I did get was trouble codes indicating a lean mixture, due to starving for fuel. Have you cycled your key to retrieve any codes yet?

Wont start


Take it to a shop for diagnostics. It could be alot of things, but is probably a faulty fuel pump.

Fuel pumps usually fail once the car gets to operating temperature and then they sieze up if they are faulty.

Although it could be alot of other things, faulty computer, to a clogged fuel filter.

99 neon motor getting hot like radator please help


One thing to look at would be whether your oxygen sensor is reading correctly. When the car is cold, the O2 sensor is ignored, since it needs to reach about 900 degrees before it can reliably tell the computer how much fuel to add. Until then, the car fuels itself based on pre-programmed fuel maps. Once it warms up, if it's bad and is telling the computer the wrong information, the fueling of the car will be screwed up, and the car will either run poorly based on what the O2 sensor is feeding the computer, or it'll revert to excessively-rich fuel maps to save the engine from damage. Carbon coming out the tailpipe points to the car running rich, and if the car is running rough, it could be due to excessive fuel in the cylinders. Check your O2 sensor out or change it and see if that helps.
