The fluid may be draining down out of the converter into the pan of the transmission! The converter can not perform if it is low ,and it will take some time for it to fill ! A faulty o' ring that seals the fluid from draining back,or out of the converter. While the engine is not running, and sitting for some time! You may be able to place the car's front end in a lower spot, and not driving for the same amount of time! Note if the transmission has a shorter time of engaugement for movement. There are other sealing rings in the pump housing that may be worn also! Repair requires removeing transmission! Be sure to check the fluid level first, and note the condition
,does it look red ,or a dark dingy brown, smelling burnt! The filter inside may be clogged, reducing the flow of fluid to the pump gears loseing needed pressure for cluth application!

2000 Sentra with automatic transmission. Drive every day the car is fine. If the car sits over the weekend the transmission won't shift out of first gear. I tried manually shifting didn't work

First, check the level and condition of your transmission fluid.
Have you had a standard transmission service performed in the past 50,000 miles? If not, DO IT NOW before the transmission fails completely.
The transmission service should include ALL NEW FLUID, NEW FILTER, and NEW PAN GASKET.

What would cause a turbo 400 transmission to not go into any gear until it wants to. It will sit for any length of time and then go into gear. after that it shifts fine until you shut the truck...

Sounds like a blocked transmission oil filter or front oil pump problem. Have you had the transmission serviced (e.g. flushed with fluid and filter replaced)?

Transmission slipping

You have a problem with the bands in the transmission. They will need to be adjusted to correct the problem. Also have the transmission filter changed with new transmission fluid. Check the fluid level in transmission first,if low add fluid and test drive. If its the same as before you will need to go to a transmission place to have the bands adjusted to correct the problem. Hope this will help you.

Just check the transmission oil levels first, if they are low this will stop it from engaging into gear.

Ford : back the truck up 10ft put truck in neutral and disengage four wheel low. (You can't drive in four wheel low cause its a pulling gear and you won't do over 3-5 mph.)
Nissan: start truck see if it idles normal. If so rev motor and check throttle for sticking and check EGR valve make sure its not stuck open or malfunctioning when you drive it..

1991 bmw 520i transmission goes into 'safe' mode

quoted from BMWE34.network
" Transmission locks in "limp" mode - 3rd gear so you can "limp" home or to your nearest dealer."

"Things to check before even contemplating a transmission overhaul:
Check electrics - Alternator and battery.
Replace DME Relay and Fuel Pump Relay - not expensive.
Remove disassemble, clean and reassemble gear selector switch - If it looks beyond saving, replace ($200)
Service the transmission ($130 from a specialist) and check/replace transmission speed sensor ($90)"
