What does it sound like to u when the car starts up (picky sometimes) Revs good (sounds strong) rough idle with foot on gas at lower rpms and dies without applying gas?

i'd try a fuel addative to clear through fuel,cylinder/valves and the cat converter may have a carbon/sludge build up ,cheaper than getting iac and the idle may be the blockage symptom give it a go nothing to loose, must have quite a few miles on it

The Timing belt broke on my 1995 mercury mystique I was looking for a manuel to fix it. thank you

This can be a big problem if it is a Non Interferrance Motor, meaning that when your timing belt broke you engine basically free wheeled during slow down. This can bend the intake and exhaust valves, extended cranking on motor trying to get it to start after the belt breaks can also cause this. You can get a Chiltons manual to have a guide in replacing the timing belt, i can say i know the motor in your car is a dual over head cam engine. These can be a little more difficult to do if you have never replaced a timing belt. May be best to take it to a professional that can test the head and make sure that no valves are bent before you pay for the belt and timing tensioner.

Starts but wont hold an idle . dies if your not on the gas pedel.runs good after you get it moving

The problem you describe could be result of a dirty of defective Idle Air Control (IAC) sensor/motor. This sensor is located on your vehicles, throttle body. The purpose of this sensor is to control the car's idle under various operating conditions including ambient temperature. In order for it to function correctly, the internal components must be clean (meaning, little or no carbon build up) and it must be undamaged. Sometimes the IAC can be cleaned; however, if this cleaning procedure is not properly done, the IAC can become damaged. This sensor is also sometimes called the "Cold Start" sensor and is located on your Throttle Body (easy to ckean and replace). A new IAC will cost $50-$100. My guess is your IAC needs to be cleaned or replaced. Good Luck!

You have several problems, none of which is the fuel pump, filter or throttle position sensor:

The coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing is not well connected. This is a two pin device with a black housing. The wires often get damaged and resistive with cold and age. Repair / rewire this.

You MAY have a problem with the Fuel Pump Relay, which is behind the center console, near the ECU. The internal contacts sometimes get arc damage, or the relay coil wire falls off.

The idle up and down is called surging. This can be caused by several issues with the throttle body.

1. the IAC motor may be faulty. There's a 4 pin connector that can be measured with an ohm meter. I doubt this is the problem in your case, because ...

2. the throttle body is full of carbonised oil. Very common with the turbo model, less so with the normal engine. The fix is to REMOVE the throttle body, take it apart, and thoroughly clean out all the built up carbon. There's a large air valve that gets gummed up. Scrap the carbon off and use brake cleaner to flush it all, then reassemble.

I have a 2001 chevy suburban and it is idoling way too high. Once I put it in drive it goes back down. Sometimes when I am driving, it does not want to shift either.

sounds like you have 2 different issues on this one. the high idle concern..i have repaired many of these with the same concern. check for vacuum leaks first, if all is ok, then check the idle air control (iac) on the side of the throttle body. replacing the iac motor 99.9 percent always fixes this concern
