Question about 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

My 2003 sunfire gave me a traction off light yesterday on the way home and then right as I was pulling into my driveway my check engine light came on which has happened in the past. The past code for the light was an evap code and would go on and off on its own. When I got into my car today I started it and it made a very funky noise, a grinding, thrumming sound. I turned the car off and looked under the hood for the problem. I noticed the oil was fine but I was really low on antifreeze. I got back in and tried to start it again only to have it stall out the first time and then not start at all. Help please?? Is it my alternator? Starter? Fuel pump?

You must get the engine control module scanned for fault codes, that is the first step in repair of the problem.

Try to recharge your battery if its starts now ,the alternator must be bad,if still wont start make sure battery is good, then check the fuses and fuseable links.

SOURCE: 2001 Pontiac Sunfire Fuel Problem

Are you certain that the engine is getting fuel? If not, then you will have to verify that there isn't any blockage in the fuel system to prevent the fuel from reaching the engine. If fuel is reaching the engine, try the following
1. Check compression values for each cylinder.

2. Inspect electrical circuitry in the distributor assembly (slack wires, broken wires, dmaged rotor etc)

3. Check to see if the timing belt was not severed. This belt transmits the drive from the crankshaft to the camshaft. If the belt ius severed, the camshaft cannot rotate in order to open the valves

SOURCE: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Fuel pump not working

check and see if you have an emergency shut off in the trunk. it will be on either side of the finder wall. it is there in case you get in a accident. the button pops up. make sure the button is in all the way. that shut off might be your problem.

Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.

I have a 2003 Pontiac sunfire and today while driving the check engine light started flashing and the trac off light came on. the car has a burning smell to it .got home and touched converter with paper...

with the check engine light flashing you have a code set in the pcm that you need to have checked out as the light will only flash if there is a problem that can cause damage to the motor, like a convertor problem or overfuelling problem.if the light came on and not flash there is a code but not a possible engine damaging problem.that is the difference.either way you need to have it checked at a shop by a tech.the trac off light will come on some cars if a certain code is set in the pcm to get the driver to have things checked out that could cause damage, its just the way the manufacture has set things up.this does not mean there isn`t a possible problem with the traction control system.

You either have a short/large draw in your electrical system or your alternator is bad. Remove the alternator and have it tested at your local parts store.

Sounds like a catalytic converter problem. Driving through deep water can damage. See if you have exhaust flow at the tailpipe. The A/C is most likely low on Freon.

Sunfire Stalling

Sounds like a mass air flow problem. It's located somewhere between the air filter and intake, but usually right after the air filter box.
Check to see that the big rubber hose there isn't cracked or ripped, check to see if the mass air flow wires aren't frayed or broken or disconnected.
Start with that, and ur check engine light must be on as well.
