Oil/filter should be changed every 10k,when you do change oil use a flushing oil to clean out.Hyundai recommend semi synthetic 10/40 in Europe.

I have a 97 chevy 5.7 vortec it knocks when cold but goes away when it warms up my truck is running lean which is causing a few other problems and ive done some research and im getting it could be bearings...

all of the problems you mentioned will be there when warm. bearing noise gets worse as the oil thins out and the oil pressure will be lower than normal. Collapsed lifter will indicate with a problem misfiring and will be there all the time. Piston slap will be more evident at lower than required idle rpms. Some knocks can be from loose valve seat inserts but then again that will show up as an occasional misfire and will progressively get worse. Check that the oil filter you are using has a non-return valve built into it to retain oil in the top end when stationary. The knock may be until oil pressure is built up. El cheapo filters mostly do not have the valve. check the viscosity of the oil you are using as you may have to go up a grade.
use a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Some failing bearings (idler, water pump, alternator etc) will knock for a while until they warm up

2.4 l has top end rattle what do you think it might be ? im wondering that its lifters

CLATTERING NOISE COULD BE WORN LIFTERS OR OIL CONTAMINATED WITH ANTIFREEZE OR GASOLINE.OR THE OIL PASSAGES IN BLOCK STOPPED UP WITH SLUDGE.TRY CHANGING ENGINE OIL AND FILTER ADD A CAN OF SEAFOAM TO CRANK CASE.DONT OVER FILL CRANK CASE.IF CLATTERING DOES STOP NEW OIL GET REAL BLACK DIRTY.YOU PROBABLY NEED TO CHANGE OIL FILTER AND OIL AGAIN.WHEN SEAFOAM CIRCULATE THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK FLUSHING OUT CARBON SLUDGE BUILD UP IN OIL PASSAGES.IT WILL GO TO OIL CRANK CASE GETTING NEW OIL DIRTY.SO CHANGE ENGINE OIL AGAIN.ONCE LIFTERS QUIET DOWN.IF LIFTERS NOISE CONTINUE.YOU NEED NEW LIFTERS.

Check engine light just came on. Oil ok. could it be caused by a dirty filter?

The check engine light is triggered by trouble codes which means something is wrong with the emmissions systen, transmission, motor sensors etc. A dirty oil filter will not trigger a code. You need to scan the car with an OBDII scanner to get the codes. Once oyu have the codes post them here and we can help you. If you don't have a scanner you can take the car to your local auto parts store, they'll scan for free and give you the codes.

Buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

99blazer s10 trouble codes p171/p174

P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
  • There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
Possible solutions include:
  • In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

P0174 is identical to P0171, except it indicates the problem exists on Bank 2 as well.

I have a 1994 ford escort, 1.9L. She was running ruff, and i noticed that there was a lot of excess foamy oil in the bottom of the Air filter box. I changed the air filter/breather filter along with...

if it is foamy, you may be getting water (or coolant) into the engine...diagnosis for that, Blown head gasket. Not much you can do about that. Take it or find a way to get to a mechanic or auto parts store and explain the problem. In my experience this is usually why oil becomes foamy. As for it getting into the air box, i'm not sure why ford put a blow off dump into that area but they did. I took the hose out of the airbox on mine and let it dump out to the ground.

My daughter tells me that the mechanic at a garage in town tells her that the OIL FILTER doesn't have to be changed. Is that correct???

If it has an oil filter that can be removed, then it has to be changed at least every other oil change. Better repace with every oil change. Some modern cars as some european sedans (bmw and mercedes) as well as some fancy corvettes and probably vipers, do not have external oil filters and do not even have a dipstick. On this cars, the oil is special to be changed every 30 top 50 thousand miles, but even on this vehicles, there is an internal oil filter that also has to be replaced.

When idling my 2003 Acura TL the engine seems to want to almost die, also when i got on the freeway it seem to pull hard and **** like it was having trouble shifting into 5th gear. It also seems to run...

You may need to change the coil pack(s) or modular. The modular is what the coil pack(s) mount to. I'm not familiar with that engine so you may have a 3 piece coil pack, or a 1 piece. (If it doesn't have a distributor). You may first try replacing the coil wire. There is a good chance that is loose, or bad. It could also be the coil itself. Try the coil wire and if it still acts up, then try the others. Also, when you changed the plugs, did you put new plug wires? When I do a tune up on my vehicles, I change the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, (coil pack, modular), whichever is equipped, oil, oil filter, tranny fluid and filter with gasket, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket oil filter, and fuel filter. Try changing the fuel filter as well, as plugged or dirty fuel filters can cause stall outs. I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing fixya.com for answers.

Tranmission trouble

Hello Longhorn,
Thank you for choosing FixYa.com for your answer Im David.

Depending on whether you have a automatic or a manual shift there are a few things that may cause your troubles. If you have a automatic transmission check your fluid level make sure its full it could also be your transmission filter It may be dirty if there is alot of miles on it. there are quite a few things that could cause it from vacume lines to sensors my advice is to check the fluid level if that looks good I would take it to your local garage and have it hooked on a computer to check for vacume leaks sensor troubles etc..before you go spending alot on parts you probally do not need.
