The antenna is fine; and radio worked fine for 11 years, until 36 hours ago, when, mid-news, the radio went into auto-scan mode, and has continued since

Is the antenna good/ connected, can you tune in to a strong station manually? if so, its in the radio.

the antenna is fine; i have always been able to tune into a strong signal; the radio simply went into autoscan mode while it was delivering the news over a strong signal

So its in the radio. Like I said. I would recommend sending it off for repair, the dealer will have a place to send it. I think OEM radios are better .

What is the definition for controlled variable?

You have either constants or variables. Constants are things that does not change. Time is a constant - you can't move forward or backward in time.
Variables are parameters that change. Some variables are fixed, others can be controlled.
A controlled variable is a variable that can be changed at will or according to circumstance.
For example, if you have a radio with a fixed coil / tuning capacitor which can receive only one station, the variable (radio stations) cannot be controlled, it is fixed, therefore a fixed variable. A normal radio can be tuned to different stations, therefore a controlled variable.
The engine on a car has a controlled variable speed. A normal light bulb is controlled by a fixed voltage, until you build in a dimmer switch, which now makes the voltage variable, and controlled.

Radio wont set stations

hi, does the radio go back the standard settings when you turn off the key, if it does than try checking the fuse for the constant power supply as this controls the time memery and the settings for the stations, if not try holding the station button down for 3 to 4 sec
hope this helped

Radio doesnt work in FM mode

Before you replace it, remove it from the dash and check to see if the antenna is hooked up to it. Sometimes it can come loose and that's your problem. It's a thick black cable with a single prong out of it. It connects directly into the stereo. Good luck!

Toyota Sequoia Radio not remaining on last stations used

Check the fuse block, modern radios use 2 power wires, one switched and one constant power, you are missing the constant voltage for the memory, they can also throw you a curve ball by having an inline fuse on the radio harness.
