Question about 1998 Saturn SL

1 Answer

I have a 98 saturn sw. Replaced the alternator, there's a wire, thick looks like it goes to the starter? Didn't take this wire off, don't know where it goes. possibly called the B wire. Alternator reading says there's no charge/bad alternator. Started as a starter problem, someone else took my starter off. Where does this wire go?

There is a heavy red wire that connects to the only terminal on the back of the alternator. The starter should have a smaller purple wire connected to the starter solenoid. A red (positive) battery cable connects to the top terminal of the starter solenoid. There also may be smaller red wires connected to the solenoid at the same connection where the heavy red battery cable connects. Hope this helps

You still have a problem with your starter. Sounds like you missed the wires going to the solenoid which engages the bendix.
Recheck the wiring.
It could also be a bad starter from the parts store. Won't be the first time.

1995 Saturn Sc1. My question is this. The main big wire off the alternator goes to same stud located on starter in which goes to battery positive?

I think you are right. But make sure by checking other wires that may go to the frame for ground. usually positive wires are red or none black. you can check with a meter or light to see if it registers or lights up-then its positive for sure(the 'big wire off alternator or the stud on starter)...

Locating the starter motor on saturn 2001 s series

If you're under the car like your changing the oil: locate the oil pan and look directly up from there. You'll see the fusible link going to it from the alternator and the other large gauge wire from the battery.

98 saturn sl runs fine for a week or two, then stalls and wont restart. Sometimes it will start after a few hours, sometimes it wont start for 3-4 weeks. We have replaced the alternator, starter, ignition...

have your battery checked, sometimes when we fix the charging problem we over look the battery.if it was damaged from the alternator being bad and it was not recharged properly then is can be broken inside.you can not see this.a load test on the battery will show this damage.

Need to hook up the altenator. thick wire from altenator is loose and i don't know where it connects to.

It sounds like you have answered your own question here...? the thick wire from the alternator connecting to the starter terminal feeds electricity back to the battery though the starter cable when you are running... if you have a manual you can see for yourself in the wiring charts. Hope this helps...

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

Positive Battery cable will be the thick red wire goes to the starter motor and you thin wire goes to the alternator, do it disconcerting the battery first and follow up to starter one by one, use original parts make sure you clean the battery nipple, with sand paper, tight the starter motor nut well enough

1993 saturn sc1 new starter now no power at all

Are all wires connected? There should be a fusable link that goes from the alternator to the larger terminal on the starter then a red cable that goes from the larger terminal starter to the battery.

A smaller gauge purple wire connects to the smaller terminal on the starter. This is for ignition.

if all it does is click with a new battery it is not the alternator because all the alternator does is charge the battery i would take the starter or selinoid off if it isnt built in with the starter and have it tested the same as you did the battery

if you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.
