Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

96 Dodge Caravan ABS Battery lights stays on, radio dies, gauges drop, then restores Advice needed? Hi, I'm a bit new, so I hope you will forgive my lack of knowledge here. I have a 96 Dodge Caravan Sport with 315000k 3.3liter I had a bit of a scare on the freeway today. I'm driving, relatively slow, on the freeway (traffic) and all of the sudden my radio dies, my abs light and battery light goes on and the gauges die (at least the RPM, I'm watching the road). So after a panicky moment, the stuff all comes back. It repeats a few seconds later and then a couple minutes or so later while I'm going down the off ramp. I still have control of the car brakes, gas, steering. I get onto the regular roads and the process does not repeat itself. So, what I'm looking for is a bit of advice of what process of elimination I should go through to make sure the problem does not occur again. Unfortunately my driving/commute time does not allow me see my mechanic right after work. But, if it's serious enough, I'll take tomorrow off to get it looked at. Thank you for your time and efforts.m

Sounds like the BCM (body Control Module), although it could be a bad battery or alternator. Since the van keeps running ok, I'd tend towards the BCM.

Since you lose speedo and such, it's a bit dangerous to let it go too long. ;>

You can also buy a cheap dollar store light that plugs into your cigarette lighter. Make sure you can see it, but it doesn't blind you. If the light stays at about the same brightness, or gets a _little_ brighter when the gremlins attack, it's probably NOT the battery or alternator. yes, it cheesy and cheap, but I _like_ cheap troubleshooting.

Oh, be sure the light uses a regular light bulb, NOT an LED, an LED won't change brightness enough to be sure of.

96 grand caravan 3.3l battery not staying charged. new serpintine belt, batterty, pulleys, and alternator tested ok several times. Also new computer installed and no fuses are blown. Should I replace the...

if alternator tested fine the wire on the back of the alternator is not getting a circuit back to the battery to charge it.
You can run a wire from the back of the alternator to the battery positive post and it will charge the battery.
I have done that several times on dodges because of ammeter gauge in dash being burnt out.
With the ammeter gauge burnt out it breaks the circuit from the alternator to the battery and the battery does not get charged.

Fuel guage, temp. gauge , or speedometer do not work. Only happens when the ABS light comes on. If ABS light goes out the gauges all come back on

Could your ignition key be sticking to far forward and staying there when released? I have had cars and trucks do this and it messes up stuff. If it is sticking and not coming back to the on position when starting the vehicle then get out the WD 40 and give ita shot.
I hope this helps, The Raz

My 98 dodge caravan has a loss of power and dies when stopping

Filter is mounted directly above the pump module on top of the fuel tank. You may have to drop it down a little bit to change it. Also check the fuel pressure with a good gauge while it's running poorly and see if it's out of spec.

Need help? all major repair has been done....

If all your gauges (or most) have died at the same time then it is probably a live wire problem, as all these gauges are normally possative feed and nagative switched. Check the live wire is connected properly on the back of the dash.
I hope this helps.
