If you have a CJ or Cherokee, when you move the 4x4 lever, it engages the transfer case which then transmits power to the front as well as the rear wheels. For most (99%) of all four wheel use, you use the front position on the shifter one notch behind the two wheel drive setting. Use 4 low only for pulling vehicles out of mud etc and don't drive in that range. If it sticks in 4wd after disengaging it, usually backing up about twenty feet will help.
If you have a Grand Cherokee, the 4x4 usually is a quadratrack unit. That one stays engaged but only goes into 4wd mode when the rear wheels begin to slip. (by itself). Rules for using low are the same.
It is very important to run the exact same size and style tires on any 4x4. It is mandatory on quadratrack units. Use of odd sized tires can cause driveline damage.
There are variations on different year vehicles but the basics remain the same.

Fwd lights always on jeep compass

try it in dirt yet (gravel, sand, grass dirt)
since you didnt post transfer case type can't answer
if you use , part time 4wd on dry pavement this will happen as
will 4low or lock. read the operators guide, one more time.

its a new car get it serviced, or drive in dirt, and turn off 4wd
see if it stays off. if you use the car wrong, the dealer will just stare at you, in a very not so funny way.

new cars come with options, or by sub model, (same really)
some have Automatic Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive
which one?
The Compass also features two electronically controlled four-wheel drive systems. Freedom Drive I and Freedom Drive II, Freedom Drive I is a full-time four-wheel drive system with locking capabilities

if some one used LOCK
you need to unluck in dirt. drive to side of road with gravel
or any loose surface and get bad to normal.
read opeators guide 1 more time.....

Four wheel drive

wow no year stated, you do make this hard.

your not correct.

why not say what surface you are on?? ice, dirt? what?

AWD means car can drive on dry pavement as the AWD has a

center differential, (a very nice option)

ok, there are 2 axles. open and closed

or open diffs and locking LSD

open diffs suck but wait, not really.

if your car has LSD all wheels, turn buy LSD actions.....

if fully open, then 1 lose wheel spins and the traction tire dies.

(sucks, huh, but.... look here.)

so all savvy 4wd drivers drag the foot brakes and get poor mans 4wd.

try it , on ice and be AMAZED,, it does work.

then... about 2007?

on my 2008 jeep JK, it has software 4wd locks, it does the above

drag trick with software, (amazing huh) using the ABS Pump.

it sees the ABS sensors go nuts and corrects it with the pump.

a nice feature,. for sure. and free. totally free, no LSD hardware.

I dont know the year of your car so can say. what it really has.

there are many 4wd setups. im used to ww2 jeeps and part time.

im on my 5th jeep and not one GC. (its too heavy for serious 4wd off road)

The FSM covers this magic, you can get a real FSM for small cash

i recommend it, on all cars.
