Trying to change belt. Bolt will not come loose. Afraid of stripping. Does this remove by cranking to the right instead of left as is most common? Used extreme pressure and it does not break loose.

Some nuts are left hand thread, and is depending on the direction of travel of the revolving part it is fitted to. The direction of travel will always tighten the nut. Spray with WD40 and try turning clockwise.

If the power comes on and off, in all probability it is not a mechanical failure. Seems like the belt that drives the steering pump is loose, and when extra power is required, such as in a tight turn, then it slips and stops providing power assistance. Poke the belt with a finger to see if it loose, and tighten it accordingly. These pumps do not require much power, and the belt does not require to be extremely tense. By trial and error, tighten it bit by bit until it stops slipping. Over tensioning will provoke a failure of the pump pulley. Also check if the pulley or belt have grease on them, because that will contribute to slipping.

Need to tighten a serpentine belt on a 2001 chevy cavelier 4-cy. the belt is EXTREMELY loose and it looks like the bottom left pulley is coming apart. what is this pulley for?

that is your tensioner pully and it very well may be going bad new one isnt very expensive and can be easily removed with a socket wrench and replaced please be sure to make a diagram of the serpentine belt before you remove so that you will rember how it goes back on

You will need an alternative wrench. The alternator wrench will grab the alternator for you and allow you to move the alternator to make the belt extremely tight. However, depending on which engine you have, you may have a serpentine belt which is tightened automatically with an tension wheel. If this is the case you have the wrong size belt and need to obtain the correct, smaller belt.

Alternator belt makes noise

if your happy the belt is in good condition; then your problem is simple;your alternator belt needs tightened it simply come loose and will come off if not tightened.hope this helps.adrian

Mercury villager belt tension

it is possible on some cars to over tighten or under tighten but on your van i believe the tension er is spring loaded which means you cannot over or under tighten because the spring keeps the belt the right tension. and as far as $580 i think that is extremely to high. i don't think you need to replace anything
