I have had a simlar problem with my Nissan Altima.

I would check the Air Meter Senser which is loacted between the air filter and the air intake hose that goes to the intake.

if that is cloged, then it will cause to mal function and report to the computer wrong problem

I have a 1993 olds cutless ciera and when i come to a stop it wants to cut off i put it nutrual and come to a stop and give it a little gas and it will go again or i put it into drive and it cuts off

It depends on how fast you are going when you come to a stop.
If you are above 45 mph it could be the torque converter not releasing. If you are under 40mph it could be a faulty idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body. The computer controls idle speed by how much air enters the throttle body thru the control valve.

I am looking at a hyundai that has a high idle when in park or neutral, but comes down to normal when in gear. The owner said that he put a cheap code reader on it and it said that it needed a chip for the...

There is no such part as a chip in the electronic engine control system or the automatic idle speed control system which is controlled by the systems computer (called the PCM. Let me explain how the idle speed control system works, there is a valve on the engine (called the Idle Air Control or "IAC") that passes a metered amount of air (creates a controlled vacuum leak) coming into the engine around the engine throttle valve, this metered leak of air raises the engines idle speed. The reason that the idle comes down when you put it in gear is that you put a load on the engine. The causes of a high idle speed are most often a vacuum leak at the engines intake or a vacuum leak due to a large vacuum leak elsewhere. The 1st thing to do here is check the intake for leaks, to do this get a bottle of propane and the torch adapter that goes on it, remove the screw off end from the torch pipe, and put a 2 foot length of rubber hose on it or plastic hose, start the engine and warm it up, then trun on the propane to a low flow and spray the gas around the top of the engine and listen for changes in the engines idle speed, if you find a vacuum leak you will hear the engine idle change. Repair the leak as needed.

MANY THINGS CAN CAUSE VECHICLE TO SHUT DOWN. BEST TO HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED WITH CODE SCANNER.THAT WAY IT WILL HELP PIN POINT PROBLEM QUICKER SO YOU WONT SPEND LOTS OF MONEY BUYING TOO MANY NEW PARTS.

the air fuel adjustment has little to do with what u have going on, but here is what u do, make sure the engine is at normal operating temp temperature (at least 185F) then verify idle speed is set to spec +or- 50 RPM, then turn the carb mixture adjusment screw in until the idle speed starts to drop off, then turn it back out until the idle speed increases to its highest point (u will need a hand held tachometer), when u have reached the highest idle turn the idle screw back in 1/4 trun, that is lean best idle.

Shutting off

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
