Question about 1991 Ford F150

1 Answer

Parked my 1991 Ford F-150 one evening then the next morning it would not start. After jumping it off it ran for several minutes with the vlotage gauge in the normal range after unhooking the jumper cables. I sat in the truck for a few more minutes and noticed the voltage gauge dropped as the engine spit and spuddered as it died. I jumped it off again witht he same results. I replaced the solenoid and hot wire and cleaned the battery post before charging the battery with a battery charger. After several hours of charging it fired right up but soon shut its self off as before. A friend of mine had told he had owned the same model and the computer had lost its memory to idle. He said he had started his and ran it at 1500rpms for five minutes abd driven it but had forgotten the sequence he used. I tried this myself and made it half way around the block before I had to be jumped off twive to get the truck home. Other similar problems I have read about people replacing the battery and alternator only to have the same problem. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated as I am a disabled vet and live on a limiyed income.

Truck is draining charge and not charging battiers

I just went thru same thing with my 2003 f-350 diesel. I hooked up my horse Trailor and drove to Von's parked went in came back out and truck was dead. I tried to jump it didn't work. Then over next two hours two tow truck Drivers hooked up to both batteries full power charge direct to my truck and would not start.
End story required two new batteries alternator and cilanoid discussed above. In other post. Also contributing to the cause was really badly coroded cables they looked good at the connection point but wher discovered to be coroded inside the tubing just above the end connections so bow it has all been replaced and I have had no trouble since. Hope this helps. Tanya

It sounds as simple as water in the fuel. I would stick to the simple solutions first before throwing money at parts. Drain tank, use a good fuel additive and refill. See if that doesn't solve your issue.

Ethanol fuel in hot weather will vapour lock easier than the old non-ethanol fuels.
Maybe that was all it was.
I get the calls ........usually from shopping centers on very hot days on cranking but no start cars.....and it is 80% just a vapourized fuel problem. TOO HOT FOR THE FUEL UNDER THE HOOD.
The cars start the next morning....or late in the evening.

1984 Ford F-150 Starter problem

You have a bad connection. It will pass enough current to keep things running, but the starter load is causing it to burn the spots that are making contact.

I had this same issue with my '86 F-150, and the final solution was to replace the all the heavy cables: battery to solenoid, solenoid, to starter, and block to battery ground. Thoroughly clean the block where the negative cable connects, and the battery terminals.
