It depends on the make and model and its not that bad you need a pulley puller. and the correct tools. Tools to do it cost about 50$-70 need a crowbar/prybar to take the belt off. need a socket kit, a 3 arm pulley puller. And takes about 2 hours to replace. Thanks, Midwest-tek

Automatic Belt Tensioner pully assembly Removal / Replacement

The automatic tensioner is held on by a nut. You have to jack up the car crawl underneath and reach up between the alternator mount and the rear exhaust manifold . The access to the nut is finger tip small. You will need a 14mm 6 point socket , a short extension, a long extension, a short breaker bar,a socket wrench, and a pivot joint for the extensions. Getting the nut onto the new tensioner is the hard part. Finger tight the nut and double check that the tensioner is positioned correctly in the mounting slot. Then tighten down the nut and put the belt back on.

What is the easiest way to replace a tensioner pulley on a 2002 Dodge caravan. Do I need to replace the whole assembly? Or can I replace just the pulley. It has the 3.3 flex fuel, if that makes a...

you will have to replace the whole assembly, the spring that keeps the belt tight is in the middle and cannot be replaced without considerable pain and suffering. use a 1/2 inch ratched and release the tension on the belt, carefully slip it off the pully. keep as much pressure on the belt as you can, use someting and tie it out of your way, keep the tension tight this will prevernt you from having to mess with lining up the belt on all the pully's. the tensioner is held on with 4 13 mm bolds (1/2 in SAE ) may work as well. wiggle it a little, ant it will pop off. . reverse the process. Make sure the serpantine belt is filly within all the pully's before you start it or you'll be replacing a belt as well.

Have you checked to see if the tensioner pully bearing has frozen up? They have to be changed every now and then. The bearings can be replaced without replaceing the whole tensioner pully and spring assembly.

Tension spring and pulley fell off

that seems to be a problem on several types of cars .. the pivot bearing freezes up so the tension spring no longer limits force on the belt .. then the pivot may break at a time of high stress .. you can replace the entire assembly with factory or replacement parts .. then its a good idea to inspect it now and then to make sure its free (pushing on the belt should cause movement of the tension pully .. there is usually a nut on the pully that you can use to move the pully to relieve tension so the belt can be installed ..

Either in the center of the tension pulley or arm the tension pulley is bolted to there is a square hole that a 1/2" drive socket wrench will fit in. Find the hole, put the socket wrench or breaker bar in the holy and rotate it clockwise and that should release the tension.

Tensioner assembly.

the assembly you are looking for is on the passenger side of the motor there are some bolts you need to remove and it is alot easier if you remove the powersteering pump once you have the tension assembly off the car you will need a torkx bit to remove the pully. I just couldnt see myself spending 800.00 so i called the local auto parts store and they ordered the tension pully it caos me 26.00 but it was a long 10 hrs (there were other things I was fixing also

Belt inst

For the 3.0L Vulcan, you have a tensioner that is located just below the power steering pully. Use a 15mm wrench or the 15mm shallow well socket that comes in a Serpentine Belt tool to push the tensioner toward the rear of the engine compartment. Take the old belt off and route the new belt. The belt begins at the crankshaft pully, goes under and around the a/c compressor, up around the power steering pump, around (with the flat edge) the idler pully, around the alternator, the flat edge then sits against the tensioner and back around to the water pump pully. You should have a belt routing diagram on the underside of the hood just above the serpentine pully assembly.
