    I need to know the type of engine (size) and the submodel for this vehicle to answer your question as many different types of ignition systems were used for the Oldsmobile Achieva for1992.

Test crankshaft positioning sensor. Also, I have seen the key shear on the harmonic balancer causing everything to be out of time. Are you sure there's no spark; or is it maybe sparking at the wrong time?

How to replace crankpully on 3300 olbs


The harmonic balancer on these engines is now press fit onto the crankshaft and requires the use of Tool J-38197 for removal. The torque specification to be used during installation has also been revised. The procedure to be used when replacing the crank sensor is as follows:

REMOVAL






  1. Disconnect serpentine belt from crankshaft pulley.


  2. Raise vehicle on hoist.


  3. Remove right front tire and wheel assembly.


  4. Remove right inner fender access cover.


  5. Using 28 mm socket, remove crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.


  6. Remove crankshaft harmonic balancer using Tool (J-38197).


  7. Remove foreign object deflector (DO NOT use pry bar).


  8. Disconnect sensor electrical connector.


  9. Remove sensor and pedestal from block face.


  10. Remove sensor from pedestal




INSTALLATION






  1. Loosely install crankshaft sensor on pedestal.


  2. Position sensor with pedestal attached on Tool J-37089.


  3. Position tool on crankshaft.


  4. Install bolts to hold pedestal to block face, torque to (18-26 lb. ft.).


  5. Torque pedestal pinch bolt to (26-44 lbs. in.).


  6. Remove Tool J-37089.


  7. Install foreign object deflector.


  8. Place Tool J-37089 on harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.


  9. Install balancer on crankshaft.


  10. Apply thread sealer GM #(NNN) NNN-NNNNor equivalent to threads of crankshaft balancer bolt. Torque bolt to + 56 degrees (104 lb. ft. + 56 degrees).


  11. Install inner fender shield.


  12. Install tire and wheel assembly. Torque lug nuts to (104 lb. ft.).


  13. Lower vehicle.


  14. Install serpentine belt.

Yes you do....its right behind the harmonic balancer, note...do not use a pry bar to remove the balancer......

Had my Harmonic Balancer replace now it shuts off after 10 mins of it being on


the garage may have did something to the crank position sensor that is located behind the harmonic balance. there is a ring gear there to for the timing

My mother has a 1993 Oldsmoblile Cutlass Cierra. It's a 3.3. She had a new engine put in it last year. Now her car died yesterday. She had to have it towed home so my brother could look at it. He got...


Check for spark. My guess would be the ignition module going out, but could also be the crank sensor. The module sits under the coils. Check all coils for spark. If any coil doesn't spark, you can try replacing just that coil, but the problem may still be the module underneath. If you have a meter, run a resistance check on each coil from the terminals to ground. If the same coil that doesn't fire aslo has a different resistance, replace that coil.
If you have a meter, check the AC voltage on each of the crank sensor wires shown as compared to ground or battery positive. If the AC voltages are different on the three wires, suspect the sensor is bad, but also check the tone ring on the pulley (Fig 2 below) for any damage.

The 3.3L engine is the only one with the C 3 I system. REMOVAL and INSTALLATION C3I Module See Figure 1
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unplug the 14-way connector at the ignition module.

  1. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires at the coil assembly.
  2. Remove the nuts and washers securing the C 3 I module assembly to the bracket.
  3. Remove the 6 bolts attaching the coil assemblies to the ignition module.

To install:
  1. Install the coil assemblies to the ignition module and install the 6 attaching bolts.
  2. Install the nuts and washers attaching the assembly to the bracket.
  3. Connect the spark plug wires.
  4. Engage the 14-way connector to the module.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.

Ignition Coil(s)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  3. Remove ignition coil attaching bolts, then the ignition coil from the module.

To install:
  1. Install the coil(s) and attaching bolts.
  2. Connect the spark plug wires.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.

Dual Crankshaft Sensor
See Figures 2, 3 and 4
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove serpentine belt from crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove right front tire and wheel assembly, then the inner access cover.
  5. Remove crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt and crankshaft harmonic balancer.

  1. Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor and remove the crankshaft sensor from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.

  1. Position the sensor with the pedestal attached on special tool J-37089.
  2. Position the tool on the crankshaft.
  3. Install the bolts to hold the pedestal to the block face. Tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  4. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt to 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  5. Remove special tool J-37089.
  6. Place special tool J-37089 on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.

A clearance of 0.025 inch is required on either side of the interrupter ring. Be certain to obtain the correct clearance. Failure to do so will damage the sensor. A misadjusted sensor of bent interrupter ring could cause rubbing of the sensor, resulting in potential driveability problems, such as rough idle, poor performance, or a no start condition.
  1. Install the balancer on the crankshaft and install the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm).
  2. Install the inner fender shield.
  3. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Install the serpentine belt.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.

Need to replace the crankshaft position sensor


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly and the right inner fender access cover/splash shield.
  5. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer, using a puller if necessary.
  7. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the CKP sensor shield. Fig. 1: If so equipped, remove the crankshaft position sensor shield 89634g95.gif

  8. Unplug the sensor electrical connector.
  9. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the block face.
    2. Remove the sensor from the pedestal.
  10. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the sensor from the block face. To install:
    1. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    2. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
    3. Position the sensor, with the pedestal attached, on crankshaft sensor installation tool J 37089 or equivalent.

    5. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt to 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
    6. Remove the special tool.
    7. Place the crankshaft sensor tool on the crankshaft balancer and turn. If any vane on the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer.
  11. For 1992-99 vehicles, install the CKP sensor on the block.
    1. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
    2. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
    3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  12. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  13. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm) for 1987-91 vehicles. For 1992-99 vehicles, tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76°rotation.
  14. Install the inner fender shield and the right tire and wheel assembly.
  15. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the serpentine belt.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Find crank position sensor


The crankshaft position sensor should be located behind the vibration damper/harmonic balancer and it will have to be removed before the crankshaft position sensor can be replaced. (Let me know if you require assistance with the proceedure)

Also, it usually requires a special tool to align that sensor (available from most auto part stores) and if the sensor is not properly aligned then damage to the sensor or the tone ring can occur.

Here is an image of the crankshaft position sensor with the vibration damper/harmonic balancer removed.

Crankshaft sensor on a Monte Carlo 2001 SS 3.8 where is this on the car and how to replace it?


3.8L Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the serpentine belts from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  8. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer, using a (J 38197-A) balancer remover.
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield (1). Do not use a pry bar.
  10. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the attaching bolts from the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the block face.
To install:
  1. Position the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to the block.
  2. Install the bolts to hold the CKP sensor to the block face. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  4. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Position the crankshaft harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using a (J 36660-A) torque/angle meter, tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  8. Install the right inner fender access cover.
  9. Install the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  10. Tighten the wheel nuts to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm.).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Reinstall the serpentine belts.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

  1. Serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  3. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Right inner fender access cover.
  5. Using a 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Crankshaft harmonic balancer using tool J 38192 or equivalent.
  7. Sensor electrical connector.
  8. Foreign object deflector.
  9. Sensor and pedestal from block face.
  10. Sensor from pedestal.
INSTALL OR CONNECT:

  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
  2. Position the sensor with pedestal attached on special Tool J 37089.
  3. Position the special tool on the crankshaft.
  4. Bolts to hold the pedestal to the block face, torque to 20-40 Nm (14-28 lb.ft).
  5. Torque the pedestal pinch bolt to 3-4 Nm (38-40 lb.in).
  6. Remove special tool J 37089.
  7. Place the special tool 37089 on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
  8. Balancer on the crankshaft.
    • Apply thread sealer (GM 1052080) or equivalent to the threads of the balancer bolt.
  1. Torque the crankshaft bolt to 140 Nm + 56°(104 lb.ft + 56°).
  2. Foreign object deflector.
  3. Electrical connector.
  4. Inner fender shield.
  5. Tire and wheel assembly, torque to 140 Nm (104 lb.ft).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Serpentine belt.
