I am guessing you have the 2.2 liter engine, because GM did a pretty good job of hiding the thermostat on that engine. The upper radiator hose attaches to the radiator at one end, and the other end attaches to a large pipe which bolts to the back of the intake manifold. The thermostat is between the intake manifold and that pipe assembly. It may not be an easy job replacing it, and the correct thermostat may be hard to get at the average parts store.

Where is the location of the thermostat in the engine of a 2002 grand am?

The thermostat is located under the air intake pipe, mind you it is kidda difficult to replace as I had a little trouble repacing it myself. You need to detatch the air pipe from the throttle body and the air box to get at it. Hope this answered you question, Im a previous grand am owner.
