Question about 2005 Ford F-150

1 Answer

We have a 2005 f150 king ranch v8 5.4L with center console shifting that will not shift out of park. We moved the truck and put it in park. We changed rear brakes and rotor on the right side. We get in the truck to move it again and the shifter will not move. Tried jacking the back up again and moving the tires a little (thought they may have moved slightly taking the lugs off.) Checked owners manual to find out that it may be brake lights or the #16 fuse that is for brake shift interlock. Checked both brake lights and the fuse and they were both working and good. Checked all fuses and a couple were bad, replaced them. The manual said that you can bypass the interlock by putting parking brake on, turn key off, remove key, remove center console cover, press and hold white button and the shifter still wouldn't move. I am wondering what I can do to fix this problem. Any suggestions? I mentioned we just changed brakes because could have that caused this problem, OR perhaps it was just a coincidence that it happened right after we changed brakes?

SO you didnt have any problems before the brakes ..right. How does the top of the shifter feel? does it feel like its lifting the lock or does it feel like its not doing anything. I had one of these in yesterday that the screw holding the shifter knob came out. You have to take the knob off and be careful not to lose that screw. Lower the leather apron and then the slide the chrome trim down. There may be a small spring thats loose also. if you find that you can get it back together, one thing is that the spring goes on the very top of the shift rod, and there is a little lever that LIFTS the rod (throught a small slot) dont know if you need to take the trim off the knob or not, but if you do, there is a small white plastic piece at the base of the knob (back side, size of your fingernail), you need to pull this down/out to take the trim off. Dont lose it.

Check your brake light function. If that is at fault then your brake light switch may be faulty. If your brake lights are fine then you may have a faulty shift lock solenoid. Some Japanese models of that era have a button or key slot near to the shift lever. If you depress that then it should manually release the lock and allow you to move through the gears, until you move back to 'P' position at which point it will lock again.

1991 Ford F150 won't shift into park or reverse. Will go into neutral and drive, and the linkage at the transmission moves ok

The linkage may be out of adjustment preventing the shifter from moving into reverse or park.
One way to test this is to disconnect the linkage and manually move the lever on the transmision making sure that it can be set into park. Also try moving the lever counting each click from park to low gear to make sure it is clicking into each gear. If this works then the linkage is probably out of adjustment.
On the link cable there is typically a bolt in an oval shaped metal near the transmission shift lever.
1)Detach the shift cable from the transmission shift lever
2)Put the transmision shift lever in the park position, and also the shifter in the cab
3)Loosen the adjustment bolt
4)Reattach the cable to the lever
5)Tighten the adjustment bolt in place
6)Confirm that you can shift through all of the gears
Hope this helps

Trembling while shifting on '02 F150 King Ranch

First-NEVER add anything to an automatic trans.
Your vehicle should use Mercon V --PERIOD
Change it at least three times, to get the Lucas out.

Have the TPS Sensor checked out.
You most likely have a Tran Pack Solenoid going bad.
It is bolted to the valve body. You can do it yourself

Shift light replacement

First, the bulb is a GE 158.
There are two screws near the back of the parking brake cover (one each side). Move the seats forward to remove them.
After removing the parking brake cover (helps to raise the parking brake), there are two screws at the back of the shift console.
Remove those two screws. Pull out the four 'serrated' push pins under the dash area holding the shift console (two each side). Then pull the cup holder up and out.
You should then be able to remove the shift console. One suggestion- if you need to move the shifter out of park, make sure your parking brake is on! There is a shift release you can depress with a small screwdriver under the little button/tab to the right of the shifter. (Can also be reached under the console with your finger after removing the cupholder.)
The bulb holder is on the driver's side. Only one I assume.
Good Luck,
Robert
