Question about 2002 Volvo S40

1 Answer

My 2000 Volvo s40 headlights come on when they want to. RF(right front headlight) only reads at 6 volts. The LF(left front) headlights read 16 volts. Is there some way to fix this problem?

SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE A FAULTY MODULE OR BAD GROUND.

TURN HEAD LIGHTS ON AND USE A TEST LIGHT OR VOLTMETER TO CHECK THE WIRES GOING TO THE LOW BEAMS, BLUE/WHITE (LEFT) AND BLUE/RED (RIGHT) TOUCHING A GOOD CHASSIS GROUND, YOU SHOULD GET 12v IF THIS IS TRUE, MAKE SURE THE BLACK WIRE (GROUND)IS TIGHTLY CONNECTED WITH THE CHASSIS AND THERE IS NO CORROSION.

GOOD LUCK!! KEEP ME POSTED!!

    Hi!!

On your previous comment you mentioned that only the RF headlight was the problem with only 6v and the LF was OK, that changed??

Let's assume that it did. Next step up is to check the headlights switch and the module, they may be defective. Due the complexitivity of the electrical system, I recommend you take the vehicle to an electrical shop for diagnostic, share it with me, I will show you how to fix it and you decide if you want to DIY or have the job performed by somebody else. Good luck!!

Has the blub been tested? Have you checked the headlight connector for power (12 volts) and a good ground (less than 5 Ohms) when it is turned on? Do that and get back to me

I have a 2000 Volvo S40 and the left lowbeam does not go on unless I tap the fusebox, located right above the hood pop. I am wondering if the problem would be with fuse 10a, 15a or 20a? Or if not those...

Check the relay switch. It is a small square box about 1"x1"x1" and when you pull it out, has 4 or 5 terminals depending on the style. some are long rectangles. They are located either in the fuse box or in another box specifically for the relay. Or you can do a search on google for headlight relay location. Also, try wiggling the fuse or better yet relace it. there should be a separate fuse for the right and left headlights. I am betting on the fuse because the headlight relay should control both lights, whereas each light has its own fuse. Hope this helps.

How do I remove the headlight lense from a 2000 Volvo S40? It is cracked and I want to dry it and seal it.

well, you have to remove the front two wheels. Then remove the front bumper, the remove the headlamp assembly, then remove the headlamp lens and re-seal it. Good luck

Headlights light up about eight feet of pavement and no more.

There are height adjustment knobs on the back of the lamp housings you can use to adjust the height and aim of the lamps.

Due to the age of your vehicle, it is likely that they will break when you try to move them. This is very a common occurrence on S/V40 headlights; the lamps will need to be replaced if the adjusters break off, so be gentle.

Headlight out

The headlight relay should be under the dash near the steering wheel - the logical place but that is not where they always wind up. Check with a local parts house and get the part number and then go on a fishing expedition to find the relay with that number.

Behind Headlamp remove wiring clip and tape it off. At the same time tie off the water pipe. That'll do the job quickly. Otherwise removing the whole wiper system isn't a big job.
