1986 t-bird. I just charged the air after not working for twenty years,Now the vacuume hoses are missdirected, also when I try to accelerate the motor dies.

Hesitation while accelerating

The automatic tranny relies on vacuum pressure from intake manifold to signal when to shift. As the engine RPM increases, there's a proportional increase in intake manifold vacuum pressure. When vacuum pressure reaches a certain point, that signals the tranny to shift up to the next gear. When this vacuum hose has a crack or loose connection, it sends the wrong signal as to when to shift because vacuum pressure is dropping as air enters through the leak source, which the tranny interprets as a need to shift down to a lower gear. Replace all the vacuum hoses and see if this solves the problem. Look at the tranny and identify any air hose connected to it. These are vacuum hoses that you should replace, which usually there's only 1 or two connected to the air intake manifold.

Car starts fine, when I push on pedal it lulls or struggles for gas, 1986 new yorker, I can still drive on road but have to pump pedal to keep motor accelerator

Make sure the carburetor is bolted down securely so that no air is leaking in under it. Make sure the screws around the top of the carburetor are secure.

Being careful, get your head down into the engine compartment while the car is idling, listening for an air leak.

Take an unlit propane torch that has the valve open, and pass it along all the intake component mating surfaces. When you get to a leak, fuel from the torch will pass through the leak rather than regular air, and the engine will speed up a little (or a lot). Point it at all vacuum hose ends (both ends of each hose).

You should have a mass of small air hoses and connectors on top of your motor. Check to make sure these are all connected and check for holes. There is a diagram right above the radiator when you have the hood open that tells where they are supposed to go. If none of the hoses are are there, which is common, the truck will still work but may not accelerate well and you won't pass a strict inspection. This was one of the first strict years on emissions and these systems are a nightmare.

The air conditioner is working quite well, but when I accelerate, the cool air comer out from the top of the dashboard openings instead of the air conditioner openings. How can I fix this problem??

1-it sound like you have a vacuum hose off, are a hole in the hose, causing it to lose vacuum making the dapner open toward the defroster vent. Are you could have leaves & trash in your duct box, not letting to open all the way open. Thrusting the air back up top???

Yes, pretty easy to remove. You'll get behind it by taking off the "collar" plastic, pops right out. After that, there is a panel that holds bulbs. The panel folds forward to get it out. I cannot remember the bulb numbers, but you'll wind up buying like 12 of them or so. It takes less than an hour for me now, but the first time I did it took me like all day.


* Be careful with the gear selector pointer.
* Since your car is twenty years old (I have a 1987), I'd suggest replacing all of them.
* Use bulb grease, will reduce the opportunity for corrosion.

In many cars there is a flapper valve in the ductwork which is sometimes vacuum actuated.If this flapper is stuck or the vacuum line is unhooked or deteriorated,you will not feel any warm air at the vents.Look under the dash for rubber vacuum lines or try moving the selector knob for HOT/COLD or FEET/VENT/DEFROST while revving engine alittle to increase vacuum.
