First off what is the year and model of the vehicle? It could have to do with the charcoal canister. Also what do you mean by after it sets for a while? After it sits for a while the smell goes away, after running the vehicle? Once I have more information I can assist you further.
thank you,
Lee

Does the smell differ depending on how full or empty the tank is? Where do you have the smell at? When it smells have you smelled around to see where it could be, it could be several things at this point. leak in the top of the tank, a problem with the vapor canister etc. Once I have more information i will try and assist you further.
    Thank you,

Then most likely it is either a leak in the upper part of the gas tank, or a problem with one of the tubes coming from the tank. You will have to drop the whole tank to investigate further.
    Thanks,

Smell of gas outside of car that is blown in when the air conditioning is running. It seems most prevalent near the right rear of car.Does not seem to be leaking though fuel gauge does seem to be dwindling...

take it somewhere with a lift. pay them a few bucks to put it up in the air and look for wet spots. touch the wet spots and sniff your finger, eventually one of those wet spots will smell like gasoline, follow the wet spot to its source and there you go. most likely a gas tank thing, filler tube, rusted spot on tank leaking, leak in the fuel line, etc. it is a fuel injected car, high pressure, so if leak is on the engine side of the fuel pump when it goes it will be a mess and a fire hazard. it is nearly 10 years old so you might want to just drop the tank and replace the fuel pump anyway if you are looking at any serious labor.

I have problems with a gasoline smell coming from outside the gas tank. What could be the problem? The smell comes whenever I park and get close to the rear of the vehicle.

Sounds like one of the rubber lines from fuel tank is leaking. You're going to need to climb under it and visually inspect hoses.

Smells like gasoline

Hi,
Sounds like you have a leak somewhere.
Could either be on one of the fuel lines / unions or on the tank.
The fact that you had just filled it up makes me think that it is probably on the tank or filler line.
Have a good look around in these areas to see if you can locate where it is coming from and take it from there.
Hope this helps.

91 Maxima Gasoline odor when I first start the car

If it is running fine, the busted bolt isn't the source of the gasoline smell. The intake manifold has vacuum, so the smell wouldn't be getting out, air would be going in, and a vacuum leak would give you poor idling. The exhaust manifold wouldn't have much raw gasoline smell. But it would have loud noise if the broken bolt were causing an exhaust leak.

Check that the vapor recovery line is not broken or disconnected. The hose connectors get cracked. If that were broken, it would cause a gasoline smell after the car has been sitting, especially if it has been sitting in the sun, heat driving gasoline vapor out of the tank. It is supposed to condense in the vapor canister, but some escapes if the line is broken. If it is broken, driving would **** out the gasoline from the line and the wind would dissipate the smell.

Or it could be a leaking injector. With the injector cover off, engine idling and cool, you can visually look for raw gas around the injectors and injector rail connections.

Hope this helps.

I overfilled my Jeep Grand Cherokee on my first fill up and now I smell gas every time I fill up. I now stop at the click. I am told it is probably my charcoal filter because I keep smelling gas and the...

The charcoal filter is used to filter fumes from the fuel tank. There is a vent line, that comes from your fuel tank to this filter. (Charcoal canister)

Now since the charcoal filter has been completely soaked with gasoline, it will no longer function as it should. Even with vapors from the fuel tank vent line, the canister only has a working 'life' of so far.
You will smell gasoline in strong amounts until it is replaced.

Can't comment whether it is safe or not. (In my thinking, you are driving around with a charcoal canister, that has a charcoal filter soaked with gasoline. I wouldn't use it this way, but that is just my thoughts)

2000 Audi s4 has strong smell of gasoline

Pop the hood and check all the fueling lines, then check your gas tank and see if you just spilled some. Then check your exhaust pipes because you are probably running rich. You may need to change your spark plugs, or possibly a mass air flow sensor, or oxygen sensors. you should get either a vagcom to scan it or an OBD-II scanner.
