Light will provide a stored code. Most large parts outlets will do a free scan. The scan results will point you in a direction for testing.
You will also need a good volt/ohmeter and a manual (chiltons or haynes) to use as a guide for individual component tests.
If you don't test and just guess, it will cost you far more than a shop would charge to actually fix the problem.
