Question about 1995 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Before I received my 1995 Pontiac Sunfire, the overdrive gear had been disabled. The previous owner was told that the car wasn't shifting out of overdrive when gearing down causing the car to stall and not restart. He was told disabling the overdrive gear would have no big effect on the car. I have noticed terrible gas mileage when driving over 45 mph for any extended period of time. It needles at 3000 rpm when doing 65 mph. That seems a little excessive to me and I believe that is the cause of the poor gas mileage. I am concerned of any additional damage or shortened life of the engine this solution may cause in the future. Should I be worried? Can the overdrive problem be fixed?

If you drive faster than 45 - 50mph, your car has to be in the over drive gear.We both know the consequences:
Shorter life of the power train.

Assuming $300 to replace the transmission, the total might cost you around $700. Considering the value of the car around $1500 there is hard to make a decision. Your problem is more tactical tan technical. Please do not rate me. This is only a friendly advice.

Your car is not worth taking a look, not to spend money on it. Just keep driving till broke down.

1995 chevy regular cab 4.3l v6 2wd wont go into overdrive

Sounds like it is stuck in second gear. Overdrive only drops rpm by a couple hundred. In third gears you should still be less than 3,000 rpm.

Second gear is a default gear when the transmission is in limp mode. Is the check engine light on? Does it shift if you manual shift through the gears with the gear selector?

Transmission shifts hard

You don't give me much information to work with. However, 1st, look at the engine mounts. You may have a broken mount. This will make it feel like the transmission is shifting hard. Other than that, there is only a few things that will cause this. The speed sensor tells the computer when to shift the shift solenoids. It may not be "seeing" a quality signal. If this is the case, the speedometer will be bouncing too. Last idea is that it is skipping a gear. Starts in 1st, should go to 2nd at about 10 MPH. 3rd at 25 to 30 MPH. And, if you have a Overdrive transmission, it should go into overdrive at around 45 to 55 MPH. If it is skipping 2nd, it will engage 3rd at a high engine speed, and will feel like a sudden slam into gear. If this is true, your transmission needs some work. Hope this all helps. Good Luck.

How do I know if my car has overdrive?

Sunfires and cavaliers always reved a bit higher because of the way they are built but it is an AEOD transmission (Automatic Electronic OverDrive). Since I dont know what rpm and how fast you are going it is hard to tell if there is a probleme or not. I would compare with another similar car and decide what to do.

My 88 F-150 AOD 4wd shifts hard into overdrive (kinda bumps into and out of overdrive) It shifts in and out at the correct speeds its just not smooth. I bought the truck from the original owner and he told...

Fairly normal.
It is a planetary gear system with a conic frustum shaped clutch. So it tends to grab fast and hard. That is good, because then it wears less.

1989 ford ranger- "D" vs overdrive

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

1995 sunfire wont shift gear

There were two different automatic transmissions in the Sunfire that year, the 3 speed trans designated the 3T40,and the 4 speed trans designated the 4T40.If your car has the 4 speed trans, there will be a circle around the "D" on your gear selector indicator. The 3 speed trans will not have a circle around the "D".The 3 speed trans works off of a cable called the TV or Throttle Valve cable. This cable should be checked where it engages the throttle body around the area where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle body,on the engine. If the cable becomes disconnected for whatever reason, the trans will not shift out of 1st gear in most cases. If the car has the 4 speed trans, this model trans is totally electronic, and the vehicle should have the codes pulled out.For every trouble code, there is a diagnostic route to follow to repair the malfunction.
