Hi, all cars, with a fuel injection system, use some form of idle control valve that lets a small amount of air into the fuel sytem to keep the engine idling when the throttle is closed.
From my experience, this valve is a common problem and is relatively cheap and easy to repair. Of course it could be a number of things causing the problem, but i certainly think its a good place to start.

What causes engine to accelerate without gas?

  1. Leak in intake manifold or deteriorated throttle body gasket;
  2. Loose or missing throttle body spring;
  3. Defective idle air bypass valve;
  4. Bad throttle position sensor;
  5. Bad EGR valve or EGR position sensor;

If there is, or has recently been, a CHECK ENGINE light showing, have the stored codes read out. They may reveal the culprit or, at least, indicate where to begin looking.

My gmc sonoma (1996) 2.2 wants to stall when slowing to a stop and i cant figure out if its the IAC or the egr system do you have any suggestions?

the iac, when you start the truck cold does it idle up and then slowly drop? remove the egr valve and make sure theres no carbon holding the valve open, then drive it with the vale hose dissconected and see if it stalls, if it doesnt stall with the valve hose removed and pluged then i would say the egr valve, but if it still stalls then it may be the valve, also make sure the throtle body and the plate is clean, use old tooth brush and some crab cleaner to clean, do this with engine off, try these things first,

Car slows while in drive

Your transmission is slipping. Check your fluid (if automatic) or clutch (if standard). If the fluid is low then obviously add the proper kind but if not then you need to get your car into a transmission shop.

It idles in park, but when put in drive it dies. In gear driving let off of throtle it dies. Now it won't start.

With stopping the engine when put into drive , sounds like a torque converter problem , also when driving and letting off the throttle.
Is the engine difficult to turn over, Slow ? This also would indicate a T.C. fault.
It should go to a transmission shop for checking

Car running problem

Ok Slow deceleration rev responce was part of the ECU software to keep the emissions down ,however if this has only just started you can try to reset the IAC valve ,the procedure is as follows.

Turn ignition key on ,unplug the IAC valve ,turn the key off ,replug the IAC valve. do this 3-4 times .Then start the engine while holding the gas pedal to 2000 rpm ,then slowley let the go of the gas pedal till the engine idles .

The IAC valve is located on the throtle body and has 4 wires to it.

Sometimes the throtle body needs to be cleaned and then reset.

1996 Camry 100 km stalling

You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open.When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.

Car dies when coming off acceleration or at idle in traffic or at a stop. I can watch the Tach go to 0 RPM, some times it will restart immediately other times it is hard to start, so far I have always been able to re-start it and Drive on. Does anybody have verified fix for this issue, I have seen posts saying can and crank sensor, throttle body, EGR, and many more ideas... Do not really want to just start replacing parts with the hope that I eventually get a fix. Help...
