Question about 1999 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

I just purchased a 1999 Cadillac Deville. Drove fine for a few days. Today I drove 75 MPH for 20 miles on freeway and car began to overheat. Dashboard told me to replace oil. Checked the coolant, it took 1 gallon of antifreeze and 1/2 gallon water. I'm not sure if I bought it with no coolant or if it is losing coolant. Dropped it at a mechanic for estimate. Ideas?

Northstars are known to chew through head gaskets, esp in 90's models.

When a Cadillac (Northstar) overheats, It will give the message to change the oil. If you run a Northstar and keep running it long enough it will start shutting off cylinders and stop the A/C compressor to help protect itself. In this condition I would check for a blown headgasket. Possibly your technican will find the problem. Could also be stuck thermostat, dirty radiator Thanks

It turned out to be the thermostat. I also had the coolant system flushed and an oil change. Now three days later my "check coolant levels" message came on! Mechanic told me he looked the car over and all was fine with engine and water pump. Ideas??

i am having the same problem did you ever find out what was wrong with your car?

  • juliejordan Nov 09, 2010

Yes, cylinder leak (head gasket). I ended up trading the car in for an Impala. I didn't tell them about the problem, since once you fill the coolant you are fine until you drive it about 50 miles and the coolant temp rises.

I think you have a leaking headgasket or a coolant leak. Have the cooling system pressure tested first, if no external leaks show up then you have a possible leaking headgasket.

The checj engine light on my 99 pontiac sunfire came on last week and stayed on when i drove only a few short distances. it sat for 4 days and was on again when i drove under 8 miles then finally turned...

first of all, was the water on the passenger side from the air conditioner or a leak (what color was the fluid?)-the cap has to be tight, otherwise it will not hold pressure, so that has to be checked before you set off again-push down as you turn the cap clockwise, and it will not hurt to have water in the system (it actually transfers heat better than antifreeze) but it has a much lower boiling point, so the cap has to be tight. Pay attention to the temperature gauge and do NOT overheat it-it is an aluminum engine and they do not tolerate excessive heat. Take your time, no AC (although the AC being on can keep a good cooling system more stable since the radiator fan is forced on when the AC is running, so you can, within reason, experiment)-no matter what, just don't let it run hot-not worth it.
