Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

When I turn my air conditioner on the engine cuts off; I recently had a new battery, ignition coil and spark plug replaced; I was told that sometime the shutter does not close up after a batter is replace; what is the problem and approximate cost of repairs.

Hi! The problem is definitely on the MAF (mass air flow) sensor. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially on the idling and vacuum supply. The part cost is atleast $47. Once replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

How long since a tune-up? Check for applicable trouble codes. Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.
Have to test when problem is ongoing, if it cranks good, but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse.
With intermittent issues, you have to test when problem is ongoing.

3) Spark: From battery to spark plug

The battery is the source of stored electrical power in the vehicle. A voltmeter between the terminals of a healthy battery should read 12.5 volts. A reading of 12.2 volts indicates a flat battery and a reading of 10.4 volts indicates a dead cell (each cell beingabout 2 volts). A battery should be capable of sustaining high current, as needed by the starter motor when turning the engine over. When the car is running the voltage measured across the terminals shouldbe between 14.2 and 14.5 volts. The value is the voltage being supplied to the battery by the output charge from the alternator. THis charging voltage should not alter much when additional load is applied to the battery (head lights on etc).
When the ignition key is turned to the second position,often referred to as 'key on engine off', all car functions are powered up including lights and fuel pump. When the key is turned to position 3 many ancillary functions are temporarily interrupted to allow the battery to meet the extra needs of the starter motor. Electrical charge from the starter switch passes through a master fuse and starter relay before energizing the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid moves the pinion gear on the starter motor to engage with peripheral teeth of the flywheel. Simultaneously, heavy copper contacts are bridged by this same movement causing the starter motor coils to become energized thereby turning the engine over.
During the ignition process electrical charge passes through the primary windings of the ignition coil(s). The engine control unit (ECU), taking signalsfrom the engine crank position sensor, collapses the field of the coil(s) appropriate to the cylinder requiring ignition. As the field collapses the secondary coil windings discharge very high voltage through the high tension lead to the spark plug. The charge is so high that at the spark plug gap the charge jumps across with a spark. The compressed fuel air mixture in the cylinder is ignited by this spark.
Checking the spark process starts with the plugs. The condition of the removed plugs reveals a lot about the nature of the ignition within the cylinders. Dark sooty deposits indicate overly rich fuel air mix and glazed plugs indicate overly hot lean mixtures. Removing the plugs (with the fuel pump relay unplugged) and holding the screw threads to the cylinder head whilst turning the engine over will reveal the quality of spark. The spark holders and leads should be examined for discharge through the insulation to the cylinder head. Removing the leads from the coil should reveal sparks emanating from the exposed connectors. Failure to see sparks at this point indicatesa failed coil (especially if neighboring coils show good spark) or a failed crank sensor if all coils show no spark.

I connected the wrong ignition coil wire from the spark plug and now my r m p instrument cluster will not work


probably didn't connect the tacho wire to the right side of the coil for the first problem
because the engine was replaced it is possible that a sensor wire to a wheel for the traction light was damaged /disconnected

Where would the pvc value be on a 300 chrysler 2006? also where would the spark plugs be located?


Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) Valve Removal & Installation 5.7L Engine To Remove:
    1.The PCV valve is mounted into the top/right side of the intake manifold.

    2.The PCV valve is sealed to the intake manifold with two O-rings.

    3.Free the PCV valve by rotating counter-clockwise 90 degrees until the locating tabs align with the openings on the manifold.

    4.Remove the PCV valve by pulling straight up from intake manifold and clearing the tabs.

    5.Check the condition of two valve O-rings.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Inspect the PCV valve O-rings. Replace if suspect.
  3. Apply engine oil to the two O-rings.
  4. Place the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  5. Rotate the valve 90 degrees clockwise for installation.
6.1L Engine To Remove:
  1. The PCV valve is threaded into the right-front corner of the intake manifold.
  2. Remove the rubber hose from the PCV valve.
  3. Unscrew the PCV valve from the intake manifold.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Check the condition of the PCV valve O-ring. Replace if suspect.
  3. Check the condition of the PCV valve threads and clean if necessary.
  4. Apply engine oil to the O-ring.
  5. Install the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  6. Install the rubber hose to the PCV valve.

The spark plugs should lead to the coil pack via a spark plug wire but may be hidden by a plastic cover.

The following details the ignition coil changing on the Chrysler 300:

2.7L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 55 in-lb (6.2 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
3.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil. NOTE: Loosen the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the fasteners.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
NOTE: Tighten the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when installing the coil.
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 60 in-lb (6.7 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.7L Engine (2005) To Remove:
NOTE: Carefully note the position of each spark plug cable before disconnecting them so they can be installed in their original positions to prevent misfire.
NOTE: The throttle body intake air duct or intake air box may need to be removed to gain access to certain ignition coils.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  2. Remove the secondary ignition cable from the coil.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil. Bolts are retained to coil.
  5. Remove the ignition coil. Pull with a slight twisting motion to help release the boot seal with the spark plugs.
To Install:
NOTE: Apply a light film of dielectric grease to the inside of the coil boots before installation.
  1. Clean area around spark plug and coil mounting area with compressed air.
  2. Install the ignition coil.
  3. Tighten the fasteners to 105 in-lb (12 Nm).
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  5. Connect the secondary ignition cable to the coil.
  6. Install the air duct or air box if removed.

NOTE: Each ignition coil, mounted on the valve cover, fires two spark plugs at each cylinder.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.

How do you replace the spark plugs on a 1998 2.7 Intrepid?


Hi,
REMOVAL
Always remove the ignition coil assembly by grasping at the spark plug boot, turning the assembly 1/2 turn and pulling straight back in a steady motion.
  • Prior to removing the spark plug, spray compressed air around the coil area and spark plug.
  • Remove electrical connector from ignition coil.
On 3.5L engines, it is necessary to loosen the screws by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the screws.
  • Remove 2 fasteners from ignition coil.
  • Remove ignition coil assembly.
  • Remove the spark plug using a quality socket with a rubber or foam insert.
  • Inspect the spark plug condition.
INSTALLATION
Always remove the ignition coil assembly by grasping at the spark plug boot, turning the assembly 1/2 turn and pulling straight back in a steady motion.
  • To avoid cross threading, start the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand.
  • 3.5L engines tighten spark plugs to 28 N·m (20 ft. lbs.) torque, 2.7L engine tighten spark plugs to 17.6 N·m (13 ft. lbs.).
  • Install ignition coil assembly onto spark plug.
  • Install coil screws and tighten: 2.7L engine to 6.2 N·m (55 in. lbs.), 3.5L engines to 6.7 N·m (60 in. lbs.).
  • Connect the electrical connector.

Hi Gerrie1974-

WildBill49 here......Not knowing the specific year and version of your Mazda, I cannot give you a specific part at fault, but I can help you. I am assuming we're talking about an electronic distributor single coil ignition system

If the spark is weak directly out of the coil (with a known good coil hooked up with correect polarity), then the problem is in the spark trigger module... There is a variety of designs, but the basic components remain the same. This is the part of the ignition system that replaces the breaker points. It consists of two parts - a magnetic spark trigger sensor, and a spark signal amplifier/controller. these are sometimes combined into one ignition module.

Replace this module, and spark from the coil should be strong! If it is still weak, reverse the two wires to the coil.

Weak spark at the plug wire with the above good indicates distributor cap/rotor replacement time...
