Question about Volkswagen Cabrio

3 Answers

I am getting a trouble code 1582 (idle adaption at limit) on my scanner what is the probable cause and fix for this code? I am not able to pass california smog test until this is resolved. The vehicle is a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio with a 2.0 Litre gas engine.

Thank you for your assistance I will try your suggestions however I have sprayed carb cleaner into throttle body to try to clean and I did notice a lot of carbon/debris but I did not use a q tip to try to clean better. I replaced a bad vacum hose at the throttle body but code returned. What is the normal amount of miles / time before all codes are reset and car can be checked at a smog sation as when I reset the code using my actron scan tool and take the car to smog station they put there scanner on it and not all systems are completely reset and they tell me that I need to drive the car 40 - 50 miles before all systems are ready for testing. I would try to disconnect the negative battery cable but haynes repair manual indicates that the theft deturrent system will be affected and I will be required to get an activation code from volkswagen to get the radio working again.

I have new plugs plug wires cap and rotor to install and will prior to my next test. but on initial smog test the emission part of the test showed very low emissions and the engine ran very well and very smooth and engine is still running good and smooth. Car has 100,800 miles and I have owned for the last 20,000 miles and do not know any of its previous history. I would appreciate any comments you might have after reading all of my above comments. I will not be able to try any thing on the car until 9/10/10 as I am out of town until then.

    Thanks

    Kurt

Hi. This means throttle body needs cleaning or replacement. You may try this torubleshootnig first before ding anything. This works to some VW vehicles. Open hood and driver side door . Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and wait 15 minutes . Reconnect the terminal and insert your key into ignition turn over to on position but do not start car , you should be able to hear the TB throttle body make a noise . This is the TB throttle body self aligning itself , wait until the sound ends . Close hood close driver side door and start your car , problem should be solved .

TRY HAVING FUEL INJECTORS CLEANED THEY MORE LIKELY HAVE A LOT OF CARBON BUILT UP INSIDE TIPS CHANGE FUEL FILTER SEE DOES THAT HELP.HAVE FUEL PRESSURE CHECKED IT SHOULD BE 44 PSI AT IDLE.IF FUEL PUMP WEAK IT WILL EFFECT IDLING.

1582 Common error code. The throttle body needs to be cleaned. If you follow your air intake pipe from the left hand side of the engine bay where it creeps up to the manifold, this is where the throttle body is.
Just take off the air intake pipe from the throttle body and open the butterfly valve and clean the inside of your throttle body. The error code you get is typically from a build up of carbon that is preventing the valve from either openeing or closing all the way.
You will want to use carb cleaner. Open the butterfly valve and spray away and use a Q-tip or whatever will reach inside. When you clean the throttle body, do not even remove it from the manifold, you just held the valve open and spray inside and clean.
After cleaning the throttle body (TB) you will never have to do a idle adaption with the VAG, just leave the negative cable to the battery off for 20 minutes to reset the CEL and allow the car to relearn the idle when you put the neg cable back on.
But if this is not helping then the problem can be,almost all cars with computers have what called adaptive stratagy. the PCM (powertrain control module) learns what the engine is doing and make little compensations over time. example: it the engine runs lean, the 02 sensors will let the pcm know and it will richen the mixture until its normal again. your code means that something is affecting the idle quality and the pcm is adjusting the idle and now there is no more adjustment left. possibilies are, running lean due to injectors clogged or vacuum leak, unmetered air leak around MAF sensor ( reads the air coming in) fouled plugs, timing, plugged fuel filter... could also be rich due to plugged air filter, leaky injectors, bad fuel pressure regulator. This all possibilities needs to be checked.Check and replace the faulty component.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Yes near to 40 -50 files.it needs to be driven to get reset. But try the cleaning suggestion and recheck. And yes the manual is right, disconnecting the battery terminal and then reconnecting it will ask you the radio code.If right code is not inserted then radio will not work. And to get radio code you will get it only from dealer. Its a 4-digit radio code which comes with the car manual if radio is factory insyalled,if its a after market radio then it comes with the after-market radio instructions kit book. Its a 4 digit radio code.

But if you have misplaced that code then the dealer is last option for code.
But you try with cleaning the carbon build-up with q-tip and check. But before disconnecting the battery terminal get in contact with dealer if he is able to provide you the radio code, then only disconnect the battery terminal.
Thanks for keeping updated with your query.

Why is engine light on ?

The 506, 171, and 1582 codes could be due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. Use throttle body cleaner to remove the carbon build up and retset codes. The 0440 code is the evap system code. This is usually a loose or worn out fuel cap.

Well the codes are, po103,po1505,po301,po300,po302,po123, this was scan yesterday.

code po103
It means the MAF sensor is either contaminated or failed. The reason it runs while unplugged is the car goes into a memory mode where it adjusts the fuel trim to what it remembers doing when the car was running well. It stalls when it's cold and guzzles fuel because the MAF sensor detects the amount of air and adjusts the fuel accordingly. Because it has no reading, it is just dumping an estimated amount of fuel not the right amount for optimal combustion. You can try to clean the MAF sensor and see if it works, but if not you will need to make sure you have power going to the connector and if so replace the sensor. If you want to confirm the sensor failure you can check the resistance or observe the output on a scanner. Then your car should run fine. If you have no power to the connector then you will need to check the wiring and the PCM.

code p1505
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1505 indicates the IAC system has reached the adaptive clip.
Possible causes:
  • Air leaks.
  • Plugged air filter element.
  • Throttle body/linkage binding.
  • Contaminated or damaged IAC valve assembly.
  • Damaged throttle body
The Adaptive Idle Air Control (IAC) strategy is designed to adjust the IAC calibration to correct for wear and aging of components. When engine conditions meet the adaptive strategy learning requirement, the strategy monitors the engine and determines the values required for ideal idle calibration. The adaptive strategy stores these values in a table for reference. This table is used by the PCM as a correction factor when controlling idle speed. The adaptive idle table is stored in Keep Alive Memory (KAM) and retains the learned values even after the engine is shut off. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is output to indicate that the adaptive IAC strategy has reached its learning limits.
Whenever an IAC component is replaced or cleaned or a service affecting idle is performed, it is recommended that KAM be cleared. This is necessary so the idle strategy does not use the previously learned adaptive values.
It is important to note that erasing DTCs with a scan tool does not reset the adaptive idle table.
Once KAM has been reset, the engine must idle for fifteen minutes (actual time varies between strategies) to learn new adaptive values. Idle quality will improve as the strategy adapts. Adaptation occurs in four separate modes. The modes are transmission select in neutral with air conditioning on; transmission select in neutral with air conditioning off; transmission select in drive with air conditioning on; and transmission select in drive with air conditioning off.

po301 po302 and po300 are all cylinder misfire codes
usually a p0300 is a random missfire code due to a fuel problem probaly bad gas , use some in tank fuel treatment such as techron or lucas injector cleaner, after adding fuel disconnect negative terminal to batt, to clear codes and see what happens if that doesnt help...
Go buy new platinum tip spark plugs - supposed to use OEM's for best results, about $15 each (Nippon Denso's or NGKs, can't remember which but AZone will tell u which it is), and new plug wire kit (cheap ones are fine) from Orielly or AutoZone. They're very easy to install. Put them in and u'll probably be good as new.

I had the same issues at about 64k miles as well & it worked out fine.

po123
That is a fault code for your TPS (throttle position sensor).
It's probably been shorted out. check out the wiring and see if u have any disconnects or shorts....

please rate the service....
good luck
have a nice day

For years the check engine light has been on on 2000 cabrio convertible. It has failed inspections in the past and have spent hundreds trying to find the problem. Never have been able to and the check...

1582 is likely a vacuum leak somewhere and possibly throttle body that is dirty. 1426 can be a couple of things one of which is a check valve at the fuel tank and or a cracked rubber hose from the tank to the evap. or a bad evap. They are made out of plastic and can and do crack. If the dealer cant fix this then they are really incompetent. The time to get this fixed was under warranty. Also the sensors associated with both those lights should be checked and or replaced. I prefer to test sensors rather then just randomly replace them. The car will normally run fine with these codes because it can adapt. the 1582 code can mess up the mixture though causing it to fail emissions. This is where having a second vehicle is nice. you can take the time to go over each system very carefully till you find the problem. use a vacuum pump and check the hoses and check valves etc. it can be fixed but just because some flunky passed a ASE certification does not mean he understands the physics of how it all works. Too many dealers have such mechanics, they can change a tire but have no idea how to use a scope to figure out the tough ones. They would rather sell you a new car. Find a rundown shop somewhere and ask the mechanic how he would go about fixing your problem. If he can give a good process that includes the tank the vac lines and plastic connectors and sensor testing then you probably have a good one.

Idle adaptation at limit

Your cruise control module circuit is reporting low voltage.
Check your battery, all your fuses, as well as the alternator.
You could try replacing the cruise control fuse, and hope that solves the problem. If not go to an auto parts store that has electrical diagnostic equipment and ask if they could identify the source of the problem (could be the module is going bad).
