Checked both already, they are fine. Also checked starter. Mostly curious as to what Asterisk on dash indicates. Can't find it in repair manuals. Found it in Owners, but no explanation. Thanks anyway.

I have a 1993 Town & Country that lost power while driving yesterday. The voltage reading on the dash "vanished" (digital reading), and an asterisk (*) appeared. Battery is good, starter is fine, don't think alternator problem since battery is charged. Anyone know what asterisk indicates? Can't find it in repair manual, found illustration in Owner's Manual, but no explanation.

Does anyone know what the Asterisk on my dashboard means? It appeared after my 1993 Town & Country minivan shut off while driving.

It could be several things, but the first thing is to charge your battery, and see if it will start. I suspect your alternater is faulty, but get it started and make sure the cables are clean and tight first. If, when you get it started the battery is not charging, you should probably replace the alternater.

The digital cluster mounted on the town and country have an internal
computer that can analyze some default and test the operation of the
    meter.

It receives the data engine via the Body Control Module. If there a default code or a problem, a flashing asterisk below the speedometer.

Here are handling has to recover the default codes:

    -switch off

-press the TRIP and RESET button at the same time and hold

    -switch on

-message "CHEC" appears in the bottom of the meter then starts to show a 3 digit number that indicates a failure

-the playback sequence always ends with 999

Then starts a self test of the meter by pressing the button US / MET to move to the next test by pressing the same button

    List of error codes:

    110 cluster failure

    900 lack of all messages

    905 bus loop failure

920 lack of computer messages from body

    921 body computer odometer failure

940 lack of messages from engine controller

    999 end

    Hope helps.

Have you tried swapping the PCM (powertrain control module)? The PCM has connectivity on all electric current that runs inside the car including the engine and transmission. The PCM may need to be resetted to resolve this. If there's a PCM you can swap you may try that to confirm the problem.

Hi! Please try to check the fuse underneath the dash if the instrumental fuse is blown. Blown fuse can cause this issue too.

  • slpruchnicki Sep 01, 2010

That was the first thing we checked. They are all good.

Hi! Let's start over. Does the car crank? Talk to my fellow mechanics and found out that this issue comes from a weak battery. I strongly suggest tha you charge the battery as a first course of action.

  • slpruchnicki Sep 01, 2010

Battery is OK. It will crank, but not start. Tried a little ether, engine tried to turn over, but wouldn't. Don't thik it is a fuel issue because of vanishing voltage reading on dash and mysterious asterisk...

Engine will start, but all the dash warning lights come on, then the engine shuts off. if i tap under the dashboard on the passenger side before engine shuts off, most the time it will keep running.

Sounds like you have a loose connection in the instrument cluster in the dash. There were a lot of Town & Country owners having engine issues related to a faulty instrument cluster. The security system is connected through that somehow and if it loses power, like it sounds yours does, it would shut the car off even while driving. The fact that you can tap on the dashboard and keep it working leads me to believe it's the instrument cluster.

Possible error in the dash cluster, the wiring, connectors or the panel electronics. If the fault occurs while driving could this be relative to the vibration of the instrument panel. If so you might have to have a very closer look without thinking of changing tthe whole unit.
tap within to see if the fault is recurring if so get closer to the area of contact.

Miss and dash lights go crazy

I have seen this before in my own Town & Country.  It was an electrical problem.  This can either be a bad battery or a problem with your alternator and voltage regulator.  I would lean toward the alternator if you have enough power to start the engine but then it runs poorly and gauges and lights go crazy.
