All you should have to do on the older cars is follow the upper hose from the radiator to the engine. The housing on the engine where the connects is where the thermostat is located.

Hello acweldy.
The thermostat is on the left(drivers) side of the engine near the front on the lower rad hose.
This diagram is a little small, sorry, but they don't allow us much space here.
The housing for the thermostat points down.
If you need further help in locating it, please ask me here in a comment.

Having trouble with my 1997 lincoln continental i changed the radiator thermostat and the water pump and it still over heating please help

Have you burped the system? If air gets trapped it can prevent the thermostat from opening and make your engine overheat. To get the air out, start with a cold engine, turn the heat on vent or floor only and run full blast, run the engine with the radiator cap off until it gets to operating temperature. Keep an eye on the coolant level and add as needed until it doesn't drop in level for five minutes. Some cars may require removal of the thermostat so you can drill a small hole in it to allow air to escape from the engine side of the thermostat. Keep any eye on the temperature gauge to make sure you don't over heat it while trying to burp it.

Engine hot temperature high loosing colant

Check for radiator leaks, hose leaks, try to locate the area were the leak is occuring. You may need a new thermostat. If you can locate were the leak is, chances are you'll find the area in need of repair. If coolant is running from small line " hose from radiator or coolant bottle", could be a faulty thermostat.
