Question about 1991 Isuzu Rodeo

Open Question

My 1991 Holden Rodeo (Isuzi Trooper) is very often hard to start. It turns over and over and wont start. By turning off the ignition and trying again and again eventually it will run. Its not a fuel problem, when it wont start there is no spark present, although there is 12Volts at the coil, which checks out OK on resistance tests. Ive checked and cleaned every electrical connection I can find including earths and replaced the distributor. Often it will start next time OK, but inevitably I encounter the starting problem every few starts. It has one other symptom which may be related- it idles fast. I keep adjusting the idle via the throttle cable, but when i start it next time the idle is too slow and it nearly cuts out. So I adjust it back up and its too fast next time I start it. Sometimes tapping the accellorator pedal make it idle normally, but when I accelerate again its back to the same fast idle when I take my foot off the acellerator.

SOURCE: isuzi trooper diesel jerking when driving

Hello, it is possible that the pump is going bad but, it sounds more like water in the fuel or a dirty filter or dirty injectors. I would try a fuel additive first to see if that will clear your problem. Let me know if you need any help. Good luck.

SOURCE: stalls and wont idle when cold

Re the trooper. You have a couple of possibles. The most likely is the glowplugs or glowplug relay. Don't be fooled into thinking glow plugs only heat to start - the also do whats called postheat. That is to raise the cylinder temp until the block is warm. IF they are not functioning (clip a light onto one whilst switching the glowplug on to test the relay) this is common.
Most likely is a stuck EGR valve - stuck open so running a very lean mix when cold. Its two bolts on the inlet manifold, pulls out and looks covered in soot - it should push in and spring out. Can be cleaned in petrol or alcohol or with compressed air.
More remote is possible you have a faulty injector...only really testable by an engine centre...

What Honda Rodeo has the same front driveshaft as Isuzu Trooper?

are you sure that it is a honda rodeo
the only company to make rodeo was holden and that was actually a gm product made in malaya and badged holden rodeo under licence to isuzu
That is why holden rodeo was dropped and became holden Colorado and the isuzu mu came on the scene as the licence ran out and isuzu wanted their own make on the market
so research the last of the rodeo lone and the first of the isuzu lines to see where there is a similar item

How to bypass immoblizer and theft system on 2000 isuzi rodeo

Have you verified the timing belt isn't broken? It's getting fuel?
Have you recently purchased a new ignition key, or did the battery go dead on your fob? Could be fuel pump, or even a fuse.
Start the cheapest....Check all fuses, under the dash and the hood. Listen for the fuel pum to buzz when key is turned on.

Lost keys for Holden rodeo 1991, can I get replacement ones from Holden, or will I have to get a locksmith?

If you take the vin number to the dealer service department they may have the pin numbers for the key and so can give you the numbers so that a locksmith can machine a key for you . You may be able to get a locksmith to remove the tumbler and then he can read the pins to make a key for you. The only other way is to get a new tumbler for the ignition switch from holden and have the new keys programmed to suit the immobiliser in the car.

1999 Isuzu trooper wont start everything works lights, guages but makes no noise when key is turned to start it , could it be neutral safety switch in shifter?

If you hear a click when the ignition is turned but no start its a high possibility that its the starter or the wiring going to and from the starter. Hope this helps! ~Derek~
