I changed all egr componet egr valve, egr selinoid, and sensor and check all hoses for clogs. reset check engine light still comes on after driving for a while

It could but if its that bad you'd be burning a lot of oil and overheating. After changing all the filters and the PCV valve next would be to look into the EGR system. If your EGR hose is clogged it will cause revving and hesitation, uneven idle and often no check engine light. The other thing could be the camshaft position sensor needs replacing. Its typically in the distributor under the cap or hanging on the outside of the distributor. Usually the check engine light will come on if its the camshaft position sensor. Its worthwhile to check for engine codes even if your check engine light isn't on.

2003 hyundai sonata 2.4 dtc po401 have changed egr egr solenoid and plastic vaccum valve cleaned intake ports replaced o2 sensor checked wiring all the way back to computer cleaned all engine grounds...


problem is typically the sensor or the device that is being monitored by the sensor. The the EGR return pipe is not properly engineered, a cold pipe with cause the inside to gum up with carbon deposit. This pipe is used to pick up exhaust gas to dilute the air before the combustion. If this "connection" is clogged, you will have a rough time at higher speeds. Pipe is easy enough to remote and take a look inside. If the gum up is too thick, I won't spend the time to chissle this out and just buy a replacement.

How do I change the egr valve and is there anything else that needs to be done in conjunction to keep the check engine light from coming back on?


the valve seldom fails. The lines that are connected to it fill with carbon and the valve opens and flow of exhaust doesn't happen. The senser is in the egr tube and it fails more the the valve even clogging up. EXUP senser, has two vacume lines and a 3 wire electrical connecter. The hoses break and come off the tube they connect wo gets clogged, hook a piece of hose to each one and blow though, shoulld blow easy. if bothe lines blow though easy and the hoses are good, the car is running smoothly at idel and the check engine light can be reset and drive the car and the light comes back on and has the same code but runs smoothly all the time replace the senser reset the computer and away you go

also have them change the oxygen sensors, if it's deemed necessary. have someone reset the computer. if the light stays off, then you don't have to.

P0401 is: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected

The pipes are supposed to have pressure in them when the EGR valve is open, but sometimes, with the EGR closed may have vacuum... the DPFE compares the pressure/vacuum values from the 2 pipes (these 2 pipes take their pressure before and after an orifice) and knows how much recirculated exhaust gases go through the engine...

Your problem definitely sounds like an EGR problem, but it could be the EGR valve, the DPFE sensor, a clogged hose, a leak/clog somewhere in the EGR piping...

The code basically means your engine either is not getting the amount of burned exhaust gases it should back in the intake to lower NOx emissions or the DPFE sensor thinks your engine is not getting enough burned exhaust gases...

What is going on?
Exhaust Gas recirculation low flow detected means that: there is vacuum problem in the EGR system - between the combustion chamber, EGR valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses) , EGR Modulator Valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm, dirty EG/air filter or clogged airlets/hoses) and Vacuum Switching Valve ((mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses OR electrical - VSV not properly synchronizing with the ECM, for instance).

Effects?
This causes the combustion chamber temperature to increase and produce Oxides of Nitrate (NOx) that is out of an acceptable emission range. This triggers the Malfunction Light (check engine light) to stay on (after a couple of driving cycles)!
Solution: Focus on EGR airways (hoses...) and organs (EGR valve, EGR Modulator, VSV), clean, check or replace the defected one. VSV seems to be criticale as it plays electrical & mechanical function. Once the repair is done, Clear the P0401 code using an OBII scanner.

I know the economy is bad, but change all of the plugs. Check your PCV Valve hose, 150 rottens them out allowing air to be sucked in, thus all kinds of codes.

Depending on mileage. Dismount the EGR valve and clean passages. If you are really good dismount the throtle position sensor body and clean out passages with Choke Cleaner., dismount where the EGR valves connects to the engine, clean out passages. Also check the hose thats behind this mounting to ensure is not clogged. If clogged clean it out. If not replace it. Is about 1.5 ft. long, connects to the PCV Valve Hose.

When is the last time you change your harness. Can't remember??? Replace it. Good Luck
