Not unless something is loose somewhere. If you had a belt break or slip off, you will need to replace the "belt tensioner". Once a belt tensioner has had a belt slip off, or break; it will damage it. It will never work properly again, and will need to be replaced. If you keep buying belts, every one will eventually slip off, or break, until you buy a new tensioner.

every time i put the new belt on it jumps off. it looks like the crank shaft pulley is back further than the rest of the pulleys. and i already replaced the tensoiner pulley. what should i try next? thanks

There is no way the harmonic balancer is out of position, unless it has been removed, and was not properly torqued, to set it back in place. When I say the "tensioner", I don't mean the pulley, I mean the tensioner unit as a whole. First check the bolt that retains the harmonic balancer. It should be first torqued to 33 ft. lbs., and then turned an additional 85 degrees from there. That assures it's in proper position.

Good Evening, I would like to tell you no that they are in their places, however a belt tensoiner can go out, a idler pulley can go out or any of the other pulleys. If they are all solid and do not wobble, you can get a splash of water or rain up there and it can happen. I would also tell you go with a good quality belt, due to the fact that belts are belts designed to certain specs but some are just made better. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Joey

Yes if a bolt comes loose or debris hits and puts slight bend in a pulley or bearing burning up---also build up on a pulley from the belt can cause belt to not ride properly

1996 Ford Mustang v6 coupe idler pulley and belt tensioner

I guess it depends on what failed.
The idler pulley is a simple pulley with a bearing held on by a large bolt.
If the bolt broke, or came loose, you may have problems keeping a new bolt in place.
If the bearing wore out and came apart, the bolt is probably still in the bracket. A failed bearing is common after 10 or 15 years, a loose bolt is somewhat rare.
The belt tensioner is another pulley mounted on a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight. Same design but a different function.

Changing idler pulley

you can change it by releasing tension on the pulley arm(as if changing the belt) and then unsecuring the idler arm pulley by means of a large bolt in the center of the pulley, usually reverse threaded. Pulleys cost about 10 bucks, but good bearings don't come cheap.
