Question about Nissan Frontier

Open Question

The belts on my 1997 nissan pickup were squealing. I had the belys chnages and the problem was solved for a few weeks. Then the squealing started again. I took it back to the shop, they retightened the belts and the noise stopped for a few more weeks. Then it started again. I checked the tension of the belys by hand and they seem ok except for the one to the ac compressor. It seemed just a bit looser than the other. How can I tighten it? Or should I take it to another shop. I don't want the belts overtightened and cause damage to the tension bolts. Any suggestions.

SOURCE: 1987 toyota SR5, 22REC pickup, engine squeals

the squeel is most likely the pulleys are contaminated with old rubber from the old belts or that you have a dry alternator bearing,if you try running the engine without the belt you will locate the problem easier.
the timing belt should be changed every 60k or 5 years whichever soonest...

That should be right if it is an idler pulley. On belts that do not have idler pulley you will have to loosen lock bolt on adjuster. Like alternator

SOURCE: 2003 Tahoe (5.3). AC belt/tensioner/compressor (Chatters)

The compressor is bad. I have the same problem. Apparently none of the tahoe's compressors are worth a ****! im having to replace mine too. You have to change the compressor, the accumulator/dryer, orifice tube and flush the lines. If you look on ebay you can buy a complete kit to change it all for about 300 bucks. The dealership tells me that you need to change the fan clutch as well. They told me that the reason for the noises is the fan clutch isnt working properly and it lets the compressor get too hot causeing higher pressures in the compressor due to the heat. They called it liquid slugging I believe. Mine doesnt break the belt but when you give it very much gas it makes a squeal and then a grinding noise like your trying to put a standard transmission in gear with it running without pushing in the clutch. I asked if you could just change the fan clutch and they told me no its too late, you have to change the compressor and dryer/orifice tube.

My alternator belt is as tight as it can go and is still squealing, but it is a new belt recently. What can I do? I wonder if I was sold the wrong belt originally, so that it is slightly too big to tighten...

Since your post just says 97 Nissan Pickup I cannot be specific. But, generally:
  • if the belt adjuster/tensioner is at the end of it's adjustment then you need a shorter belt.
  • Make sure there are no foreign materials on the pulleys or new belt
  • If it's an automatic belt tensioner it might have to be replaced

Squealing fan belt.

New belts tend to stretch after a week or two.Simply retighten the belt now that it has settled in & it will be fine. Was it the alternator belt? That is the most common one to sqeal after replacement.Hope this helps you.

Belts squeal on 1998 Nissian Frontier

Squeal belts usually mean not enough tension. I have had problem with persistance squeling in the past, the problem turn out to be cheap aftermarket belt that keep stretching and wouldn't maintain proper tension, putting brake fluid or any kind of oily liquid on your belt will make it worst not better.
