Question about 1996 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

In the last couple of weeks my 1997 Toyota Camry LE would not shift out of park (2 times). The shift lever will not depress and the key remains in the locked position even when pressing on the brake preventing the car from starting. The mechanic says it is the shift interlock. So far I've been able to mess with the keys and brake to get the ignition to release so I can start the car. What kind of problem is this and is there anything I can check before agreeing to get the service done.

A 94 toyota camry le 2 door v6 transmission drive gears not workin but park and reversole do

There are really only 2 possibilities which are within your reach

- low trans fluid level, check that with engine idling
- poorly adjusted shift linkage, see p69 here

If anything else has failed, like a shift solenoid, it's really a job for a specialist.

I HAVE A 1992 CAMRY LE AND IT WILL NOT COME OUT OF PARK UNLESS YOU PUSH THE SHIFT BUTTONAND HOLD IT IN TO GET IT OUT OF GEAR

this could be from two issues. 1- a bad shift interlock switch or 2- a bad brake light switch. if this helps leave positive rating.

My 1996 Toyota Camry will not shift out of park at times. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem before I have to take it to a mechanic? Thanks Joe

There are few things that has to be checked 1)Transmission Lockout switch on the brake pedal 2) If transmission lockout switch checked out OK , then the solenoid on the gear lever that is activated by that switch has to be checked. 3)Step on the brake pedal and see if the brake lights come on. If they don't, check the brake light fuse to see if it is blown.
If the brake lights come on, then turn the key to where the steering wheel unlocks, but no lights come on. Set the park brake and see if the shifter will shift into neutral.
If the shifter moves out of park, then you will need to check the shift interlock actuator as its not getting power when the brake pedal is depressed.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

1992 toyota camry v6 auto. can't move shifter. car starts and ste

Car must be on and brake pedal depressed to shift. If you have no brake lights then the car doesn't know the pedal is depressed and will not shift out of park. This car has an interlock overide on the shifter console, push it and it will come out of Park. You will need a brake light switch tho.
