Question about 1988 Ford F 250

1 Answer

I have a ford 1988 f250 truck 8 cylander 5.0 engine. I replaced the fuel filter but there is another filter between the fuel filter and the fuel tank. What is that filter for and do I have to replace it? My real problem is that when you go over 35ish it dies and will not start for about 30 minutes. I replaced the fuel filter but for some reason my Dad needs me to know what this filter is and what it does. I tried looking in the Chilton book but no luck. Can you please help. No I have not driven the truck since we replaced the fuel filter.

Hi Trinity, that black plastic housing is the switching valve for the fuel tanks and sometimes they do have a filter in them . In order to diagnose the true problem you need to run the truck until it shuts down and then see if you have fuel and pressure at the fuel rail on the engine,if you do then, you need to check for ignition spark at the spark plugs if no spark check for voltage at the ignition coil then repair as needed

Good Morning: I have a 1988 Ford F250. As of late it has started to stutter and chug. The rpm odometer states that it is idling jumps in rpms. I'm not sure where to start at.

Check(replace) your external fuel filter located on driver side frame rail. pound(not with anything sharp or hard!) on fuel tank(s), as they have a screen in them to filter fuel, and also can clog. Check air filter-if dirty, blow out, or replace(recommend replace). Is engine check light on? It could be an exhaust oxygen sensor that's bad, or the catalytic converter is clogging. When was last tune up? If this problem had a gradual onset, it may need a tune up. There are other, more complex problems, - try these things first.

Replaced the fuel pump in 1988 ford f250 and the engine still seems to not be getting fuel

follow fuel lines from gas tank to engine are any lines crushed. next replace fuel filter. check to be sure fuel filter is installed in right direction. arrow on fuel filter should point toward engine. double check that fuel lines are connected properly, some fuel pumps have three fuel lines one for pressure , one for return and one vent line.last possible bad fuel pump from factory

The fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch as well. The oil pressure switch runs power to the fuel pump when you first start it
When the oil pressure reaches operating range the relay takes over
They are both inexpensive so replace both of these parts to be safe and kill two birds with one stone. If one goes out the other will soon enough

Ford 1988 f250 will not start up.

Pass side inside on the fire wall inside by the heater core just below it. There's a black box with white botton on top. Push the white button downword to reset the fuel pump.

For the fuel filter, you'll find it along the inside fram rail in the driver's side. Just follow the fuel lines.

Good luck oh and not sure if the 1988 F250 are the same as the 86, but if they are what i typed out should help. Happy Easter
