Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

I started the car, then it died just as I started it and the key got stuck. I was able to get the key released by pushing up on the solenoid in the steering column but there is no power going to anything. The battery is fine, two months old. It sounds like a fuse to me but I am unsure which one it would be to cause everything to loose power.

Key stuck in ignition?

There should be a hole under the steering bezel you can push a small screwdriver in and release the solenoid. Just in front of the key switch. Three things will cause this. One is a bad solenoid, two would be wiring from the solenoid to the shifter, three would be a bad shifter or it is jammed and won't go fully to park.

2004 suzuki automatic transmission stuck in park

that is park lock failure, build into the shifter section,it has an
electric solenoid lock. and a bypass button.
in the glove box, see oper. guide, it tells you where the erg. release
button location, and varies by sub body type and options.
its hidden cover, or a slot, on most cars. the slot type is to insert
any key in slot and push. bang, it opens (brake set, etc)

Okay, you are correct, the key is stuck because of the shifter lock wont release, the most common reason is its stuck, you will need to remove the covering around shift to get to shifter lock release solenoid, there you will clean and lube it, you will need to move it by hand as you spray wd40 on the arms, you will see how it work by pressing the shift release and you will see to lever that gets pushed, it wont move because its stuck but you will see the levers move inside, hope this helps, good day.

2004 Volvo s60 awd t 'stuck in park'

Check your brake lights and see if they are working. The solenoid in the shifter is energized by you stepping on the brake. If your break lights do not work... your stuck in park. This can be caused by a bad brake light switch located above your brake pedal or.... a blown hazard / brake light fuse. Check them first.....

2002 GMC Envoy, key stuck in ignition, car won't start. Can't close sunrooF!

Replace your ignition switch, common problem, especially in 2002. As far as getting your key out:

Look under the switch that you put your key in on the bottom part of the steering column cover....In your year, some have an open hole there in which you can push the solenoid to release your key. Others have an outline of where a hole was going to go, will be very faint. But this can be carefully cut or drilled out to access the solenoid.

Key stuck in ignition, car won't start. Window's can't be rolled Up!! AUGH!

For the key and not starting: Ignition switch needs to be replaced, common problem. The window problem is probably a seperate problem, not 100% sure on that one.

To get your key out: look under the key on the column cover. You'll either see a hole there or an outline where a hole was supposed to be. If the hole is there, push in the solenoid to release your key. If the hole isn't there, carefully cut or drill the plastic out there, and push the solenoid there. I believe they quit putting the hole there in 03', BUT like mine, you'll see a faint outline in the plastic of a hole.

There is a button on the bottom side of the steering column to release the key. Need to check out the ignition interlock solenoid to make sure it's getting power to release the key.

I parked the car and went start the car again now it is stuck in park it does start.

Do your brake lights work?
If not, check your fuse for them. You likely need to apply your brake to release the solenoid to allow the shifter to move.
Many vehicles had an manual override slot near the shifter you could push a key or small screwdriver down into to release it.

My 1990 Lexus sat with a dead battery for about a year. I replaced battery and it started right up, but I can't get the shifter out of park and into gear.

From sitting, the brake shift interlock solenoid has probably become stuck. There is a manual release near the shifter--you merely insert a key to push down the release. That will get you moving. With the engine running, try gently and rapidly pumping the brake pedal to get the solenoid moving freely. Be sure the brake lights are working.
In the worst case, you'll need to open the console to free the mechanism or replace the interlock.

Key stuck in ignition of 1996 Toyota 4Runner

This truck has a switch in the shifter assembly that tells the ignition the truck is in Park or not. If the shifter doesn't hit that switch right this can happen. Also, there is a component in the ignition (a solenoid) that allows the key to be released if the Park switch is pushed. To be sure it's one of these two things, try this.... Get the key stuck, then disconnect the battery. If the key comes right out, it's either the switch or the solenoid. Good luck!
